HEALTH AND BODY CARE

THE PLAN OF THE LESSON

1. Greeting

2. The aims

Our topic for discussion is “Health and Body Care” (Slide 1)

The aims of today’s lesson are the following:

  • to brush up all the good rules which we should follow if we want to keep fit;
  • to practise reading for specific information;
  • to make up a dialogue and role-play the situation;
  • to use reported speech while retelling a story which refers to the past;

3. Warm-up

Look at the screen (Slide 2). You can see several health quotations. Read them through and say what the main idea of these quotes is. (Students answer the question speaking about the importance of health.)

It’s clear that our health is so important because we can’t buy it (Slide 3). Say what we should do to keep fit. (Students name all the good rules to keep fit which they remember.)

4. The key vocabulary

Before reading the text from exercise 18 for specific information we should revise the key vocabulary of health and body care. Match the eight verbs from column 1 to the words or phrases in column 2 (Slide 4). All these phrases are from the text which we are going to read. (Приложение 2)

(Students work individually for about 2 minutes.) Let’s check the answers. Exchange your answer sheets. Name the collocations. Student 1, what is your partner’s result? Are there any mistakes? (keys:1d; 2h; 3f; 4a; 5g; 6c; 7b; 8e)

Now it’s time to work on our pronunciation (Phonetic drills):

(Slide 5) - to keep to a diet; to keep to a diet of fruit; Have you ever kept to a diet of fruit?

(Slide 6) – to suffer from headaches; My granny often suffers from headaches.

(Slide 7) – to go in for sport; It’s important to go in for sport. What sport do you go in for?

(Slide 8) – to take exercise; to take regular exercise; You should take regular exercise.

(Slide 9) – to ride a bicycle; Steve is fond of riding a bicycle.

(Slide 10) – to look healthy; David doesn’t look healthy.

(Slide 11) – to drink soft drinks; What soft drinks do you usually drink?

(Slide 12) – to go jogging; I hardly ever go jogging.

5. Reading

1. I suppose you are ready to start reading the text of today’s lesson. Find Ex. 18 (page 71).

- What kind of text is it? (It’s a dialogue.)

- Who is talking? (The two boys: David and Steve)

- What are they talking about? (They discuss what helps a person to remain healthy.)

2. Work in pairs reading the dialogue. Do it artistically. Mind your intonation, especially in general questions. (Students read the dialogue in pairs.)

3. I’d like to check how well you have understood the text. Have a look at Ex. 20 and choose the right answer according to the text. (Students do Ex. 20.) Now read out the variant chosen by you.

4. All the sentences in the text are about Steve. What makes Steve such a healthy person? What does he do to keep fit? (Students discuss Steve’s way of living.) Which of the two boys in the picture is Steve? Why do you think so? (Students give their reasons.) What does David look like? What do you think of his way of life? (Students come up with their ideas.)

5. As we are going to retell the text we have to report a lot of sentences from it. While reporting the sentences let’s try to make a summary of the text. Remember that it refers to the past. (Students start retelling the text using reported speech.)

6. Speaking:

It’s time to start the most exciting part of our lesson. I expect you to make up a dialogue similar to the dialogue “What we should do to keep fit”. One of you is a very healthy person and the other is like David. Use your vivid imagination and try to come up with interesting ideas in order to have some fun. (Students get ready for 3-5 minutes and then role-play their situations.)

7. Feedback

We have realised the plan of today’s lesson. I’d like to praise Student 1, Student 2 ...

Which activities did you like? Which activities were difficult for you to cope with?

8. Homework

1. Lesson 17 Exercise 22 (Retell the text)

2. Write what you do to keep fit
