б) Обсуждение происхождения слов

Do you know the origin of the word "teenager"?

The element -teen (as in thirteen, fourteen, etc) originated as an inflected form of ten. The noun teen, usually used in the expression in one's teens 'from the ages of thirteen to nineteen', was derived from it in the 17th century. The compound teenage is first recorded in 1921, teenager in 1941.

Do you know the origin of the word "news"?

One theory is that news developed as a special use of the plural form of new in the 14th century.

A folk etymology suggests that it is an acronym of the cardinal directions: north, east, west, and south.

III. Информативное чтение Newspapers in Russia

What is the situation with the newspapers in Russia nowadays? There are so many editions that it is impossible to count them. Dailies, weeklies, monthlies are at your disposal. There are 'quality' newspapers, which publish serious articles, dedicated to politics and economics. There are also the so called 'tabloids', where you can find very few news items, but a lot of pictures, entertainment, personalities and crime stories. You can subscribe to some newspapers, others you can only buy (at news-stands). There are also newspapers which are distributed free in the streets or dropped into mail-boxes. A lot of people have stopped subscribing to newspapers. Some of them can't afford it any more, some of them try to avoid the stress they can get reading newspapers and some are satisfied with television.

Nowadays there is a fierce competition among the newspapers. They organise all kinds of lotteries, prize contests, tours and so on to attract as many readers as possible. A special question is that of financial support of the press. The newspapers are no longer supported by the state, so they have to look for financial backers and publish a lot of advertisements.
