Activity 1

1

Activity title:

Food items

2

Skill(s):

distinguishing the names of the foods and saying them

3

Level(s):

Pre-A1 (level 1)

4

Exam part:

Part 3

5

Aim(s):

To name different foods

6

Materials needed:

flashcards of food (apple, chocolate, cake, orange, ice-cream, burger, banana): as many as the number of students you have; you might also need a box (for mystery box game)

7

Preparation:

doesn't needed

8

Procedure:

Step 1. Display one set of flashcards of different foods on the board. Elicit what food students might already know. Ask them to point
and day (It's an apple). Tell the students the names of the foods they don't know. Ask them to repeat after you.

Step 2. Lay the cards on the floor (as many as the number of students you have - a set for each student). Tell a food and ask the students to jump on the food they hear.

Step 3. Play the missing game with the flashcards, Ask the students close their eyes, hide a card and say "What's missing?" The students have to guess and say the word.

9

Variation(s)

You can also play a mystery box game with the toy food in step 3 (ask the students to put their hand in the box, touch an item and say what they have in their hand without looking at it).

10

Reflections

The only problem I faced is that some students can be over active and can start playing other games except for jumping on the cards names of which I told them.

I did these vocabulary activities with a few groups. One group played the missing game while the other played the mystery box. The latter has won over as the students was motivated and interested more than with the missing game.

Activity 2

1

Activity title:

Food spelling

2

Skill(s):

writing

3

Level(s):

Pre-A1 (level 1)

4

Exam part:

Part 3

5

Aim(s):

To write different food items

6

Materials needed:

flashcards of food, sheets with food for spelling

7

Preparation:

• prepare the lists of target vocabulary (food) for each pair of students and prepare one area for these lists and one area for students who are going to write (running dictation);
• print out the handouts with food for each student to write the food names.

8

Procedure:

Step 1. Display one set of flashcards of different foods (without names) on the board. Play the missing game to revise the target vocabulary.

Step 2. Do a running dictation to practice spelling of the words. Put the students in pairs. You have already two areas for this: one for
the sentences posted, one for the students to sit and write. One student in a pair will run and dictate while the other will sit and
write the words. Runners can only dictate; they cannot write for the secretary. Spelling words out is fine.

Step 3. Place a sheet of paper with the words in front of each student and let them write all the words there. This task resembles the task from the exam in Part 3.

9

Variation(s)

Instead of a running dictation you can play a hangman if there are not too many people in the class.

10

Reflections

I noticed that some students can face some difficulties with writing the words so I suggest having them
sit and write while the stronger students will run and dictate (or spell the words to their partner. This can help the weaker ones learn the words better and better prepare for the exam.

I divided the students as I described and those students who always have problems with writing and spelling some words, did the activity better than usually.

The example of the sheet from activity 2 (step 3). The food pictures are taken from the course book Kid's Box 1, unit 12, Cambridge University Press.
