The topic: “How to use the knowledge of English for further academic and professional needs?”

Цели урока: расширить возможности учащихся в общении на и\я, познакомить с необходимой терминологией, развивать умения делать связанные высказывания по теме; умение выразить своё отношение, понимание партнёра с помощью переспроса; развивать коммуникативные умения

Воспитательные цели: показать возможности использования языка для дальнейших академических и профессиональных целей; формировать навыки самостоятельной работы, учебно-интеллектуальных умений: абстрагирование, анализ, синтез, логика.

Тип урока комбинаторный: групповая работа, фронтальный опрос, индивидуальная работа.

Метод: realia approach.

Most often discussed topic is: cheating homework in mathematics, so we will speak about maths skills in English and discuss some problems of the subject.

Phonetic drill.

To subtract, to multiply, to divide, to add, value, root, to square, to solve, to simplify, to take out of brackets, square root, cube root, to transfer, to change the signs, an equation, quadratic equation

Give examples for each task – (to write on the board).

24 – 6 = (to subtract)

15 + 39 = (to add)

-28 + x = 0 and 28 – x =0 (to change the signs)

60:3 = (to divide)

57х2 = (to multiply)

52, 72 to square

3x = 4y =7 an equation (to solve the equation)

Since ancient times people have to solve different mathematical problems.

2. What mathematical problems people had to solve while making these creations? (Cм. Презентацию.)

1. To calculate the weight of the monument (статуя Христа в Бразилии).

2. To calculate the height of the monument.

3. to calculate the parachutists time of flight & and the height of the free flight (водопад Анхель в Южной Америке).

4. To calculate the number of flowers in the square (площадь в Брюсселе).

5. To calculate the length of the side of Pentagon (Вашингтон, Пентагон).

6. To calculate the speed of the train & its power (Транссибирская магистраль).

7. To calculate the number of figures in fountains & water in them (gold for them).

Let’ start our calculations.

Pentagon is the head-quarters of the US ministry of Defence .

The length of one side is 280 m. long

What’s the total length of the walls?

(280 x 5 = 1400 m.)

The waterfall in South America is 1054 m. high.

What’s the time of a parachutist’s free fight if the speed of free flight is 9,8 m/s? and he should open a parachute at the height of 300 m.?

(1054 – 300 ) : 9,8 = 70 sec.

In Brussels there is a flower show every 2 years in Grand –place.

How many flowers should be used if one side of Grand – place is 24 m. and the other is 77 m., and there are 420 flowers put in one square meter?

We calculate the area 24 x 77 = 1840 m2.

The number of flowers 420 x 1840 = 772800 flowers.

Task 1.

Sophism is specially made mistake in solving a problem or calculating. To solve sophism means to find the mistake.

Sophism 1.

а2 – b2 = (a – b) (a + b)

Let’s take a = b

Then a(a-a)= (a– a) (a+ a) (we can’t multiply by zero)

Let’s simplify the equation – divide it by (a– a)

We get a = a + a

Then a = 2a Where is the mistake?

Sophism – 2

There is also а lexical sophism:

The more you know , the more you forget,

The more you forget the less you know,

The less you know the less you forget,

The less you forget – the more you know.

So, why study?

Sophism 3.

A famous British poet G. Byron once said: “ It’s known that 2x 2 = 4, but I would be more pleased if it were 5”

It means 2x2 = 5

4 = 5 or 4:4 = 5: 5

Let’s take 4 and 5 out of brackets (It’s wrong)

4 (1: 1) = 5 (1: 1) Let’s simplify and divide it by (1: 1)

We get 4 = 5 or 2x2 = 5

Where is the mistake?

Task 3.

Imagine you are at an international biology problems congress

It is known that one poppy has 3000 seeds.

If all the seeds could grow so next year there will be

3000 x 3000 = 9 000 000 plants (the second year)

How many plants will there be in 5 years?

9 000 000 x 3000 = 27 000 000 000 plants (the third year)

27 000 000 000 x 3000 = 81 000 000 000 000 (the forth year)

81 000 000 000 000 x 3000 = 243 000 000 000 000 000 (the fifth year)

The total area of our planet is 135 million square km.

It’s 2000 times smaller than the number of grown poppies.

So in 5 years the plants could cover the whole planet .

Dandelions.

One flower gives 100 seeds (the second year)

The third year gives 100 x 100 = 10 000

How many flowers could grow up in 10 years?

(The 4th 10 000 x 100 =1 000 000

The 5th 1 000 000 x 100 = 100 000 000

The 6th 100 000 000 x 100 = 10 000 000 000

The 9th 100 000 000 000 000 x 100 = 10 000 000 000 000 000

It’s 70 times more than the whole planet’s area in the whole.

So, is English + Maths = Maths + English?

English + Maths = A discussion about Maths

Maths + English is solving Mathimatical problems + communicating with foreign people. So It’s wider.

We come to the conclusion that we study foreign languages to communicate in different everyday situations and for academic needs and professional needs.
