Teacher: This year we are going to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War. This war was an example of national tragedy and outstanding national feat. We should always remember about it, so our lesson is devoted to the celebration of the great anniversary.
1. This spring reminds us for the 65th time about the important historic date, May 9, 1945. The victory in the Great Patriotic War gained 65 years ago is a real value and pride for the peoples of the Soviet Union. It is not accidental that the national holiday dedicated to the victory was preserved when the new Russia wanted to give up its socialist past in 1991. That time two federal laws were adopted: on April 19, 1995, "the Law on Perpetuation of the Victory of the Soviet People in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945"; and a slightly earlier (February 10, 1995) "The Law on the days of military glory (victory days) of Russia". These steps showed that people all over Russia honour the memory of those who had given their lives for our freedom and independence.
2. The Victory day became for us a great occasion for celebrating the triumph of Man who in a bloody struggle asserted his right for life.

1. Великая отечественная война… The Great Patriotic War... This familiar combination of two epithets holds deep and multilateral sense. It endures in the consciousness of nations though the impetuous stream of time takes the events of the past war further into eternity. The great power of human memory and the scars of war left on the face of the Earth and in the human souls prevent those tragic and at the same time heroic years from sinking into oblivion.
2. The years when a large country went into the mortal combat with the fascist dark forces according to a literary expression of V.Levedev-Kumach, a renowned Russian poet. All the people from worker and peasant to people's commissar, from private to marshal stood up for the defence of the Fatherland. This war was an example of national tragedy and outstanding national feat, and it demonstrated convincingly that people – not only witnessed history, but played an active part in achieving the great victory.

1. In the early morning 1941 the Fascist Germany without declaring a war attacked the Soviet Union.
- 190 divisions and over 4000 tanks;
- More than 47000 guns and mortars;
- About 5000 planes and 200 ships were used that time.

1. The war turned the life of the 194 million population of the USSR. The strongest and youngest went to the front-line. During the first week of the war 5 million men were drafted, in other words the same number of servicemen that were in the army and the navy when the enemy started the aggression. About 30 million people were mobilized during the war against fascism.

2. The rest of the able population – mainly women, old people and teenagers (approximately 63 mln.), worked selflessly in the national economy giving all their efforts to bring closer the victory over the enemy. Dozens of millions of Soviet people lived under the oppression of invaders against whom the most courageous continued the fight joining guerrilla struggle, underground organization, sabotaging orders of the occupation authorities.

1. The peoples of the former USSR sacrificed the lives of 27 million sons
and daughters to the victory. The state suffered huge damage which amounted to
2,469 billion rubles (in pre-war prices). The war left its mark on the lives of
millions of people not only in our country, but in the whole world as well.

2. The need in such understanding is not based on some abstract, detached from real life factors. Our view of the past of our country has a direct impact on our way of thinking and our current attitude to life.
