Types of neologisms according to the method of word formation

In the modern Russian language, there are two main ways of forming words: morphological and non-morphological. The morphological way of forming words occurs with the help of morphemes. Also, this method is divided into the following types of morphological word formation: prefixal, suffixal, prefix-suffixal, suffixless and addition.

The neologisms studied by us during the COVID-19 pandemic appeared primarily with the help of the methods of morphological word formation.

The prefixal method of forming a new word by adding a prefix to the stem was found in the neologisms:

  • Pseudopandemia - pseudo + pandemic (from the Greek pseudos - lie), a prefix meaning: "false", "imaginary".
  • Pseudo-vaccination - pseudo + vaccination. This is the name of the Covid-19 virus vaccination by those who believe that it is a nonsense.

The suffixal method of forming a new word by adding a suffix to the stem was found in the following words: coronials, coronic, coronely.

Suffixless - the formation of a derived word by means of no suffix. Remote - remote; this is a derivative of "distance learning".

Confa - conference; this word is originated by reducing the stem.

The prefix-suffix method is the formation of a new word by simultaneously attaching a prefix and a suffix to the stem: was not found.

Addition is a way of forming words in which two or more stems are combined into one word.

Covideo is a word that arose by combining the words covid + video. This video is about life in self-isolation.

Coronathusiast - crown + enthusiast; created by combining the words coronavirus and enthusiast.

Quarantination - quarantine + vacation; originated by combining the words "quarantine" and "vacation".

Conclusion: The conducted studies have shown that most of the neologisms of the COVID-19 pandemic period are formed by the addition method. During the epidemic of coronavirus, these words were used more than once in various media headlines.
