Answering questions, defining the location, counting, understanding and following spoken instructions

3

Level(s):

Pre-A1 Starters

4

Exam part:

Speaking Parts 1-3

5

Aim(s):

The game helps students to:

  • Answer questions "What's this? What colour is it? Where's a …?"
  • Give full answers like "It's a …"
  • Follow the instructions like "Put it …. Point to the …"
  • Practice prepositions of place
  • Identify objects in the big picture
  • Describe different objects

6

Materials needed:

  • A printed board game
  • Counters
  • A dice
  • Printed exam cards
  • A picture with a lot of different objects (it's better to use on the board)

7

Preparation:

  • Revise the prepositions of place
  • Write them on the board or put the poster close to the students
  • Print the materials
  • Explain the rules and the procedure of the game to students

8

Procedure:

Step 1.

The teacher shows all the materials to students and explains the rules. The teacher and students discuss the picture which will be used for putting the cards. The teacher asks students to point to some objects or people in the picture. Then students choose counters and roll the dice to decide who will start the game.

Step 2.

Students take turns to move. On the board game there are places where students should pick up a card. When a student does it, the teacher asks him to answer some questions about the object in the card. "What's this? What colour / shape / size is it? Do you use / have it?" (The teacher writes down students' names and cards they had.)

Step 3.

The teacher asks the student to put the card in the exact place in the big picture. If it's correct, the student can make an extra step on the board game. If it's wrong, the student doesn't move from his place.

9

Variation(s)

  1. The teacher can change the pictures and exam cards.
  2. The rules can vary. For example, for each question that a student answers he can get the same number of extra steps or help his classmates to catch up.
  3. Students can also roll the dice to choose the preposition of place.

10

Reflections

The teacher asks students such questions as:

  • What was difficult / easy?
  • What was the most interesting part?
  • What object was the best / worst among the student's cards? Why?
