Materials needed:

  • PowerPoint presentation with different pictures of...
  • cards with letters
  • worksheet with gap sentences

Preparation:

  • finding pictures for presentation
  • making cards with letters
  • creating and printing sentences with missing words

Procedure:

Step 1. Have an activity with PowerPoint presentation. There are the pictures with different food and objects with sentences after each image. E.g. the picture of pineapple and the sentence 'This is a pineapple.' Students need to say if it is true or false.

Step 2. Activity with one colorful picture on the slide and the worksheets. First students look at the pictures and give as many sentences as they can about it. Then hand out the worksheets with sentences about the image. Answer yes or no together to each of them.

Step 3. Divide students in groups and give one set of alphabet cards to each of the groups. Ask them to make as many words as they can in the certain period of time (1 - 3 minutes).

Step 4. Show pictures, give some time to each group to make the word describing the picture. E.g. after seeing the picture of mouse students need to make the word 'mouse'.

Step 5. Give students worksheets with a text. Explain, that there are gaps which need to be filled by the words, going after the text. The first part of the text is done together with the teacher, and the second half should be done by students themselves.

Variation(s)

  • The order of the tasks can be changed
  • There can be individual work instead of group work
  • Everything can be shown by usual paper pictures if there is no possibility to use laptop or computer with PowerPoint

  • Group work usually helps students to feel more confident and try to do better.
  • Using some technologies makes students more interested in the process.
  • Starting some tasks with a teacher first helps students to understand the process and the task itself easier.
