Running dictation

Aim(s):

  1. Practicing writing with correct spelling and punctuation
  2. Practicing reading phrases with correct pronunciation
  3. Memory training

Materials needed:

A dictation text (a short story) suited to the learners' level

Preparation:

  1. Post the sentence strips on the walls
  2. Divide the students into groups
  3. Each group has to choose a writer, a person who will write the sentences down. Another students are readers

Procedure:

Step 1. The readers walk or run around the classroom and read the passage on the wall. Then they remember some of the passage and come back to their writer.

Step 2. The readers dictate what they remembered and the writer writes it down.
The teacher should remind the students that the reader can spell aloud but cannot write anything.

Step 3. Over several turns the readers will build the whole passage.

Step 4. The students check to make sure it's correct.

Step 5. The group work together to arrange all sentences into a story.

Variation(s)

  1. Using different colored paper for the strips. Each group is told which colored paper to look for
  2. Using individual sentences unrelated to each other for lower level students
  3. Using a dictation text with some nonsense words which the group has to replace with the correct vocabulary

Reflections

Running dictation technique has some serious educational value. It motivates the students to have wider ideas to write their text.
By asking the students to do the task in groups, they enjoyed to finish the given tasks together. They also did better in individual task when they tried to develop their paragraph.
The students got positive behavior in writing after applying running dictation technique. They could cooperate with their group and be more confident and active while they did group task and individual task during teaching learning process.
Besides that, running dictation technique can avoid boredom and it is not monotonous instead of helping the students generate their ideas.
