Activity title:

What are you doing?

2

Skill(s):

Listening for details

3

Level(s):

A1

4

Exam part:

Listening, part 1

5

Aim(s):

Practice listening for names and descriptions

6

Materials needed:

Printed cards with names and verbs (action), audio

7

Preparation:

Printed cards with names and verbs (action) related to the audio

8

Procedure:

Step 1. A teacher shows the cards with the names. Students should guess which names are for girls, which are for boys and which are for girls and boys. Then students (half of the class) chose names, take cards with the names and hold them.

Step 2. The teacher shows the cards with the verbs (action). Students should remember their meanings. They can act and pronounce like "I am skating. I am drawing." Thus they revise not only actions but also the present continuous tense. Then students (another half of the class) chose actions, take cards with the verbs and hold them.

Step 3. Students listen to the audio and find out the pair (name and action). They move around the classroom. Listen twice and check all together (passing the audio). The teacher can ask the concept check questions like "What is Paul doing?" Students should answer using name-and-action pairs.

Variation(s)

There are 2 variations:
1. There are might be cards with the names and clothes (appearance).
2. Students might match the cards using the board and magnets.

Reflections

Young learners are encouraged in this listening activity because they move; try to play the role of another person. They are interested in finding out the pairs according to the audio. It is always surprise for them "who will be your pairs".
On the other hand, sometimes it is too noisy. It might be a good idea to speak about the rules of behavior.
