The First Presenter: Dear students! Dear teachers! Dear friends! We're glad to see you right here, right now. Today we'd like to speak about the development of the cinematograph in the USA. A silent movie is a kind of a film without sound. There were no available technologies of recording and synchronuous reproduction of sound, that's why movies were silent. You could only hear music of bands or pianists who were invited to accompany films. With the appearance of sound in films most silent movies were utilized. There are not more than 25 percent of silent films today.
The Second Presenter: One of the most characteristic features of silent films is the use of titres which explained the plot of the movie. We would like to mention that a silent film is rather short. The first sound movie was an American film "The Jazz Singer" which was produced in nineteen twenty-seven, but yet silent films prevailed at least for a year and only in nineteen twenty-nine sound movies started to predominate in the USA. The first Soviet sound film "The Dass to Life" was produced in nineteen thirty - one. Silent films had been produced in the USSR up to the middle thirties. One of the last Soviet silent films was "The Cosmic Flight" which was produced in nineteen thirty - five.
