Каждый урок иностранного языка – это практика межкультурной коммуникации, потому что каждое иностранное слово отражает иностранный мир и иностранную культуру. Основная задача преподавания иностранного языка в вузах в настоящее время – это обучение языку как реальному и полноценному средству общения. А главный ответ на вопрос о решении актуальной задачи обучения иностранным языкам как средству коммуникации между представителями разных народов и культур заключается в том, что языки должны изучаться в неразрывном единстве с миром и культурой народов, говорящих на этих языках, т.е. мы должны знать страну изучаемого языка. В процессе обучения английскому языку преподавателями проводится немало практических занятий и языковых мероприятий с элементами страноведения. Наиболее интересные из них – это открытые занятия и мероприятия, проводимые с приглашением гостей. Они в обязательном порядке размещаются на сайте методического совета по иностранным языкам Дагестанского государственного университета.

Запоминаются учащимся такие креативные занятия, как перформансы, с использованием элементов ролевой игры и с применением компьютерных технологий. Например, студенты II курса с удовольствием включаются в работу над темой занятия-путешествия What a wonderful world!, представляющего собой занимательное приключение, как бы виртуальное перемещение из России в Америку. В процессе занятия студенты разыгрывают эпизоды ролевой игры, сюжет которой сводится к следующему: представительница российской компании летит в Нью-Йорк на встречу с американским партнером. Видеоролики сопровождают действия наших героев: заказ билетов, бронирование гостиницы, прохождение таможенного контроля, прибытие в Newark Liberty International Airport в Нью-Йорке, заселение главной героини в гостиницу Waldorf-Astoria. Такие занятия обогащают знания студентов о стране изучаемого языка, вдохновляют учить язык, путешествовать и познавать мир изучаемого языка.

Сценарий открытого кружкового занятия по английскому языку
“All about travelling. Enjoy the beauty of the world! Study English and travel with us!”

Teacher: Good afternoon! Nice to see you! I’m glad to see all of you! You are welcome to our performance.

Dear students! We have some honorable guests at our tutorial. Let’s try to do our best and show them your deep knowledge of English in the field of travelling.

Aims and purposes:

The purpose of this tutorial is to give you interesting and necessary information about tourism, travelling, going abroad, going through customs formalities, reserving accommodation at a hotel, booking tickets and etc. This lesson follows a single format of an introductory activity and discussion, followed by a role-play activity and a video-film. Now let’s speak about travelling as much as possible!

Teacher: Well, Ruslan will give us useful and necessary information about travelling and going abroad, he is very interested in it, because he will go abroad next month.

Student: I want to give you necessary information. We know that a lot of people travel for pleasure or on business today. But before we go on trip we should read something about the place we are going to or speak with those people who have been there. All necessary arrangements for the tour are made in advance: tickets are booked and accommodation is reserved. Russia annually welcomes many foreign visitors and guests from a number of countries of the world. We try to make our guests stay in Russia interesting and useful. Trips and travellings give people every opportunity to improve their relations and to know more about the life, history, culture, customs and traditions of each other! I am (name). I am a student of the economical faculty. Next month I shall go abroad to study! I am very thankful to our dean for giving me this opportunity. And if it is possible, I am going not only to study, but to travel about this country too!

Teacher: Thank you very much! It’s well enough. It’s very useful information for those who wants to travel and go abroad!

Teacher: As for me, I like travelling very much, what about you? Do you like travelling? Let’s have the mixed-up conversation in pairs and groups. Ask some questions to each other and take an active part in discussion.

Student 1: Do you like travelling, (the name of student 2)?

Student 2: Yes, I do. I like travelling by car. Do you like travelling by car, (the name of student 3)?

Student 3: No, I don’t. I prefer travelling by train. Do you like travelling by train, (the name of student 4)?

Student 4: A little bit. But to tell you truth, I am fond of travelling by bus. And what about you, (the name of student 5)?

Student 5: To my mind, it’s not convenient. I’d like to travel by air – plane. It’s fantastic, isn’t it, (the name of student 6)?

Student 6: No, I don’t agree with you! To my mind, it’s dangerous! The most excepted way of travelling is to travel by the sea, isn’t it, (the name of student 7)?

Student 7: But, after all, we are free to choose where and how to travel, aren’t we, (the name of student 8)?

Student 8: Yes, you are right. People who have time and money may travel as they like.

Student 9: Ok. But there are some more problems we worry about when we are going to travel abroad. For example, booking tickets, reserving accommodation at a hotel, going through customs formalities, etc.

Student 10: But actually, the first and the most important problem is to choose the right country to travel to. But to tell you the truth, I have never been abroad.

Student 11: Oh, only fancy! I haven`t been abroad too. But I dream to visit England. How about you, (the name of student 12)?

Student 12: As for me, if it is available, I would like to visit USA, because it is an English-speaking country. And the purpose of my visit will be to improve my English.

Student 13: Of course, if it is available, I would like to visit England-speaking country too. To practice the habits of the colloquial speech of English and to get in touch with English people.

Student 14: And at last. If we know English language, we shouldn`t need an interpreter abroad. Let’s study English and travel with us!

Teacher: Thank you very much for being so active.

Teacher: As far as we can see you have never been abroad. And it seems to me that you have the friends who travelled abroad. To my opinion you are eager to talk about their travelling, aren’t you?

Students: Yes, we are.

Student 1: May I ask some questions and my fellow-students will answer them?

Teacher: Yes, you may (the student’s name)! Help me!

Student 1: Have you a friend, who travelled abroad, (the name of student 2)?

Student 2:Yes, I have. My friend went for a holidays to Brazil last year. He stayed in the capital and then travelled about the country. The trip was very interesting because there are a lot of places of interest in Brazil.

Student : What about you, (the name of student 3)?

Student 3: My buddy went for a holidays to Switzerland last winter. He skied in the mountains and then stayed at a hotel in Geneva. Next year he is going to travel to the USA. How lucky he is!

Student 1: (the name of student 4), have you a friend who travelled abroad?

Student 4: Yes, I have. She is a grown-up person and a member of a Russian foreign-trade company. She often goes on business to different European, Asian and African countries. Her organization does business with lots of foreign firms. Last month she was in Great Britain. She went there to sign a contract. She said that the talks were very difficult, they discussed prices, terms of delivery, terms of shipment and other business matters. But she was pleased with the trip.

Student 1: (the name of student 5), I suppose that you have a girl-friend who travelled abroad?

Student 5: Yes, you are right. Really, I have a friend who is fond of travelling. She spent her holidays in Turkey last summer. She travelled with her parents. She was lucky with the weather and enjoyed her trip very much.

Student 1: (the name of student 6), have you anything to add? Have you a friend who travelled abroad?

Student 6: Yes, my internet-friend, Kate by name, travelled in New York last time. By the way, just imagine! She met Russian people there. It’s a small world! It was fantastic! She couldn’t help admiring the beauty of New York. The trip was great! And if it is possible, I’d like to travel to New York too.

Teacher: Thank you very much. (the name of student 1), you are so active today.

Teacher: Really, when you travel about the USA, you can’t help admiring the greatness and beauty of the cities of the country. Now let’s watch the video-film about New York, one of the most important and biggest cities of the world. And then try to give the answers to the questions given below.

Teacher: Really, this film has enlarged your knowledge about New York and the USA. You should know as much as possible about this country, because it is an English-speaking country.

Teacher: It seems to me that you are tired, aren’t you? It’s time to have a little rest. Let’s sing a song about our wonderful world and relax yourselves!

(All students and guests are singing a song “What a wonderful world! ”

Teacher: Oh, thank you very much! Not so bad! To my mind, you have a great satisfaction from singing this song. Let’s continue our performance.

6. Ролевая игра

Teacher: We know that a lot of people travel for pleasure or on business today. Now let’s get down to the role-play, where the main characters are our students. Short content of our role–play: Victoria Klimenko, the new commercial director of the TST Systems is going on business. She is telephoning Miss Jane Cartright, a manager from Continental Equipment. Victoria is asking Jane to reserve a room at a hotel. After that Victoria is going to the airport and buying the air ticket. Then Miss Klimenko is going through customs formalities. At last, Victoria has arrived in New York. After all, she is talking to the receptionist at the hotel.

1. Telephone conversation between Miss Victoria Klimenko and Miss Jane Cartright.

Miss Victoria Klimenko: Hello, I’d like to speak with Miss Jane Cartright.

Secretary: Hello! Miss Cartright’s secretary speaking. But what’s your name?

V. K.: This is Victoria Klimenko, from TST Systems.

Sec.: OK. I’ll find out if she is free and available. Wait a minute, please. – Miss Klimenko wants to talk to you, Miss Cartright.

Miss Jane Cartright: I am very busy at this moment, but I’ll call her back later.

Sec.: OK, Miss Cartright. Sorry, Miss Klimenko, Miss Cartright is busy at this moment, but she’ll call you back later!

J. C.: Hello, is it TST Systems?

V.K.: Yes

J. C.: This is Jane Cartright from Continental Equipment. May I talk to Miss Klimenko?

V. K.: Yes, Klimenko speaking.

J. C.: Did you want to speak with me?

V. K.: Yes, Miss Cartright. I am the new commercial director of TST Systems. I have a pleasure in informing you that we carefully studied your materials and decided to accept your proposal.

J. C.: Thank you, Miss Klimenko!

V. K.: I am going to come to New York and discuss the main points of our agreement in detail.

J. C.: When are you going to come?

V. K.: On Wednesday, next week.

J.C.: That’s fine. Are you going to travel by air?

V.K.: Of course, Miss Cartright.

J.C.: We shall meet you surely!

V. K.: Thank you, Miss Cartright. What hotel in New York may I stay in?

J. C.: I’d recommend Waldorf Astoria. It’s very nice and isn’t expensive. Shall we reserve a room for you?

V. K.: Yes, if it isn’t too much trouble, I’d like to book a single room with private bathroom for three nights!

J.C.: OK. Remember me to your company TST Systems.

V.K.: Certainly, I will.

J.C.: Goodbye, Miss Klimenko. Have a good trip

V.K.: Goodbye, Miss Cartright. See you next week.

2. At the airport (buying a ticket).

Cashier: Good morning. What can I do for you?

V. K.: I want to fly to New York. Are there any seats available today?

C.: Are you flying alone, miss?

V. K.: Yes, I am flying alone.

C.: What class?

V. K.: Economy.

C.: Just a moment, miss. I’ll check. Oh! There are a few seats left.

V. K.: Fine!

C.: What is your name, miss?

V. K.: Victoria Klimenko

C.: You can buy an open – date ticket for a journey back too.

V. K.: How much is it?

C.: It is 9 000 roubles.

V. K.: May I pay cash?

C.: Certainly, miss! Here you are!

V. K.: Thank you very much!

3. At a passport and customs control.

Customs officer: Good morning!

V. K.: Good morning!

C.o.: Your passport, please. How long are you planning to stay in the country?

V. K.: Three days. Could I prolong my entrance visa in case of necessity?

C.o.: Sure. The receiving part shall take care of it. Well, put your case and bags on the table and your customs form, please. How much do they weight?

V. K.: 23 kilos.

C.o.: I’m sorry, but you will have to pay an excess luggage charge.

V. K.: OK. How much is it?

C.o.: 50 dollars

V. K.: Here you are.

C.o.: Have you anything to declare?

V. K.: Oh, no. Only personnel effects.

C.o.: Personnel effects are duty free and are not liable to duty.

V. K.: Thank you!

C.o.: Not at all. The next, please.

4. Miss Victoria Klimenko is flying from Sheremetevo airport to Newark airport in New York.

(Victoria Klimenko has arrived in New York. An assistant of Miss Cartright is meeting her)

Assistant: Good evening!

V. K.: Good evening!

A.: Are you Miss Victoria Klimenko?

V. K.: Yes, I am. What are you?

A.: I am Miss Cartright’s assistant. I am here to meet you. There is a car over there. I am waiting to get you to the hotel.

V. K.: Thank you!

A.: No thanks. This way, please.

(They are driving to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel)

5. At the hotel. Reception.

Receptionist: Good evening! What can I do for you?

V. K.: Good evening. I have a room reserved at your hotel.

R.: What is your name, please?

V. K.: Klimenko

R.: Just a moment. I’ll check. A single room with private bathroom and American breakfast for three nights. Is that right, mam?

V. K.: Yes, that’s right!

R.: Just sign the register. Here is your key, please. It’s on the second floor. The lift is over there.

V. K.: Thank you!

R.: OK. Anything else, mam?

V. K.: No, no. Fine, thank you!
