Level – Elementary + (5-6 grade class)
Aims
- to develop students' reading skills
- to collect and resume the information for further speaking
- to develop students' listening skills
Timing – 90 minutes (2 lessons of 45 minutes)
Equipment – PC (the Internet connected), Work Sheets with quizzes, texts and puzzles, Flashcards or pictures with animals.
Introduction In the lesson students practice vocabulary of animals, parts of body, read and resume the information to do a speaking activity and a quiz, listen to descriptions of the animals in the Zoo to check their comprehension doing a puzzle.
Procedure
Warming up (7-8 min) | Ask students if they visit any Zoo, when and where it was, that animals they've seen, share the expression they've got. |
Pre-Reading task (2-3 min) | Show students 3 pictures of animals (a tiger, a giraffe, a koala). Ask them if they’ve seen these animals in the Zoo. Divide the class into 3 groups (using a Magic Bag or smth the same) |
Reading task (15 min) | Hand out the texts (according to the chosen animal) and ask each group to
research the information about the animal. Tell them to make notes on the main or
interesting information they find so they can report to the rest of the class later. Ask
them following the plan: Animal Profile
The plan is better to be written on the board. |
Speaking task (15 min) | Each group appoints a spokesperson who reports to the rest of the class about the animal. |
Doing quizzes (10 min) | Do quizzes from the sites below to get points. Students should be grouped
by representatives of 3 former groups to get a success in the quizzes. Listening task (15 min) | Show 3 videos, ask students to get as much information as possible to do

Puzzle time (5 min) | Do the puzzle. Students might be regrouped or combined by pairs. After finishing the task students hand their works in to the teacher. |
Play time (15 min) | 1) Hand out 1-2 (according to the number of students) animal rhymes and
ask students to read and guess the answer (Animal Rhymes). Read their rhymes one by one
and wait the answer from the classmates. (Приложение) 2) Play the game “Wild or Domestic” with a ball. The teacher name the animal and throw the ball to one of the students. The student gives the answer if it is wild or domestic. For example, “Tiger” - “Tiger is a wild animal”. (Приложение) 3) Hand out the worksheets with parts of an elephant (Elephant). |
Conclusion (5 min) | Remind that the world of the animals is wide and vast and not all of them can be kept in a Zoo. Repeat the main ideas of conservation effort of tigers, giraffes and koalas. |
Homework | Make a group/a pair presentation about any animal (use Animal Profile as a plan) |
Anticipated problems may be:
- Technical problems (poor Internet connection etc.)
- Students are not able to do Quizzes in this case the teacher can help
