Theme: Profiles of Outstanding People.

Grade: 7.

Duration: One class period.

The objectives of the lesson:

  1. to practise listening for details
  2. to develop speaking skills on the basis of the text
  3. to activate students background knowledge in order to help them predict likely vocabulary in a given text
  4. to develop critical thinking

Materials

  1. Presentation “Bill Gates”;
  2. audio-visual equipment;
  3. handouts.

Procedures

I. Beginning of the lesson

1) Greetings

2) Introducing the aim and the contents of the lesson

II. Pre-listening activities

1) A short discussion T → CL about well-known people, reasons why they are famous.

2) Developing skills of unprepared speech. (Slide 2) T → CL

T: Look at the man. Can you guess who he is? What is he famous for? / What do you know about him?

3) Revision of the words “Appearance” using the table “Appearance” on the blackboard. P1P2 → CL

Appearance

general appearance: handsome, good-looking, pretty, attractive, beautiful, plain, ugly
age young, middle-aged, old, in his early/mid-/late thirties
height tall, short, of medium height
build fat, plump, well-built, slim, thin, of medium build
eyes green, blue, grey, big, small
hair short, long, wavy, curly, straight, fair, light/dark brown
other features beard, moustache, glasses, broad shoulders, full lips, friendly smile, dark/light complexion, bald, wrinkles, freckles

T: Look at the picture of B.Gates (Slide3) and describe him.

4) Predicting of the content of listening (P1P2) using handouts.

T: What information about B.Gates do you think you will hear? Add the words to the chart.

III. While – listening activities

1) Listening for gist understanding. (P1P2)

T: Listen to the CD, look at your charts and mark what you’ve predicted correctly.

Comprehension check P1P2P3→CL T: What wasn’t mentioned? e.g. I heard about .... but I didn’t hear about ...

2) Listening for specific information. (P1 )

T: Listen for the second time and fill in the table.

V. Home work

Speaking about B.Gates and/or the other outstanding person using the table.
