ХОД ЗАНЯТИЯ

Hello! You are looking great. Delighted to see you. How are you? Fine, thanks. And you?

Teacher: The subject of our lesson is «Mass Media».You are young journalists and TV reporters and students of our college. We are going to have a press-conference to decide problems of Mass Media in Russia and in Great Britain. I'd like you to discuss the role of Mass Media in the life of people.

Student: Let me introduce myself. I am a student from college. I'm interested in reading newspapers. I'd like to subscribe to some of them оn the problem which newspaper is the best? My question is to a journalist from Moskovsky Komsomolets.

Journalist: Well, there are national daily newspapers, such as Komsomolskaya Pravda, Trud, Sovetskaya Rossiya. There are also national weekly papers, for example Argumenty and.... Fakty, Literaturnaya Gazeta, Nedelya, most national papers in all parts of Russia. In Moscow the most popular local newspapers they read according to their own political beliefs. There are local papers in all parts of Russia. In Moscow the most popular local newspapers are Moskovsky Komsomolets and Vechernyaya Moskva. There are also many free local newspapers which are delivered to people's homes whether they ask for them or not. They usually contain a lot of advertisements. One can find newspapers for children and teenagers? For sports fans, for people from all walks of life . I advice you to subscribe to Moskovsky Komsomolets.

Student: I’m a student. My name is Svetlana ... I want to ask you a question. My favourite newspaper is Moscow News. When was it published? What materials does it contain? Thank you very much.

Journalist: This is a weekly newspaper of Novosti Press Agency. It was published on the 5-th of October, 1930. The newspaper contains current news, detailed articles about home and international events, reviews of new books, plays, TV shows, letters of readers to the editor. Some people read articles on social issues and the pages devoted to literature and the arts. The newspaper published jokes, short stories and items about traditions, places of interest and famous people of English-speaking countries. It is very useful for those who study English. I think Moscow News helps students in studying English. When they read this newspaper they learn a lot of new words and expressions.

Student: Well, I'm a student of college number 9 «Arbat». I want to ask you a question. What is the most interesting story articles have you written lately? I subscribe to the magazine «Round the World». It's interesting to look through some magazines or read them. Thanks a lot.

Journalist: There are a lot of interesting facts in magazine «Round the World». Some time ago I wrote about mysterious phenomenon of a snowman. Now and then in different parts of the earth thousands of people see a mysterious creature which they call «А Yeti». Some people say «The Yeti» lives high in the Pamir, in the snow. It's 3 meters tall. It walks on 2 legs. It has a man's face and long brown hair on its body. «The Yeti» is half man and half animal. Rainhold Meisner is a mountaineer. He saw a Yeti twice in the Pamir mountains. More and more scientific stories are written. But there are no direct answers to the questions: What is «Yeti»? Where does it come from?

Student: (from «The Times»). I'm a student of the teacher's training college.
My name is Vladimir … I'm interested in British Press. May I ask you a question.
What kind of newspapers are printed in Britain ? What is the difference between «quality» or «popular» papers?

British journalist (from «The Times») The British Media consists of the press and TV broadcasting. Now a couple of words about papers. First of all there is no subscription. You may buy any on sale. There are two main types of newspapers: the «popular» papers and the «quality» papers. The «popular» papers are less in size with many pictures, big headlines and short articles. They are easy to read. They are such papers as «Daily Express»,« Daily mail», «Daily Mirror», « Daily Star», « The Sun» and others. The «quality» papers are for more serious readership. These papers are bigger in size, with larger articles and more detailed information. The «quality» papers are «The Times», «Daily Telegraph», «The Guardian», «Financial Times», «The Independent».

Teacher: Some people think that television is one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century. It is the most popular part of Mass Media.

Student: I want to ask a question to TV reporter about television in Russia. What do you think about the role of television in our life?

TV reporter: Television plays a big role in every civilized society. Today it brings the world to our living-room. We see people in our country and in other lands and learn of their customs, occupations, opinions, problems. We become better informed by watching documentaries, science programmes, discussions and by learning the most important economic, social and political issues of the day. We see great events which will pass into history. We can see famous people. We become more cultured people by learning more of the arts. Television helps to relax after a hard day's work. Television programs gather big audiences. Apart from their entertainment value they provide useful topics of conversation.

Teacher: Many people watch TV at leisure. One can choose the program one likes best. Those who like music can listen to various concerts. Sport fans can watch
football or hockey matches. Television extends our knowledge about the world in which we live. Millions of people can see different lands, unusual animals and birds, mountains and valleys.

Student: My favourite TV program is «Ноmе-2». I wonder What kind of TV is the most popular today ? Thank you very much.

TV reporter: I think "Reality TV”is very popular today. Millions of people watch « Reality» TV series «Behind the glass» and «Home-2».The major advantages of such programmes that is that they are not movies based strict scenario. Ordinary people find themselves in extraordinary situations. «Reality»TV shows the directed real life in which people are competing for a prize. Of course they have to follow certain rules but generally they are free to behave themselves as they like. I think it most attractive. Nobody knows beforehand the result of the game. It interests people because the game is unpredictable as the real life.

Student: My favourite TV programme is one made by Dmitry Krilov. It is a weekly programme. It is broadcast on Sunday. This programme is very popular in our country. They show many historical places, tell interesting facts about different cities, broadcast interview with famous people. I like this programme and try not to miss it. I prefer to watch youth programmes such as «While Everybody's at Home» on Sunday and can you agree with the statement that if millions of people watch the same programmes the whole world becomes a «global village»? Thanks a lot.

TV reporter: In a way we can say that whole world has become a big village. In every country of the world people watch the same programmes. Such programmes as «Who wants to be a millionaire?», «Comedy Club» have been invented in our country and in Britain too. People all over the Globe have common hopes, fears and beliefs. Thus it is not surprising that people in Russia like British TV game.

Student: I wonder «What programmes are there on British TV?».

TV reporter: Various television programmes are presented by the BBC. The BBC has two television channels BBC1 and BBC2. BBC2 provides more series alternative to BBC1 although it also shows films and some comedies. Usually the same BBC television programmes are seen all over the country. British people like to watch television. There are fifteen different programme companies each serving a different part of the country.

Teacher: Now, students, let's have a test.
Your marks: …

Teacher: Now students ,answer my questions

Teacher: Let’s do the test.

Teacher: In conclusion I must say the Mass Media are useful and important. Nobody makes you watch TV if you don't like it. Switch off your TV set. But why do you forget what a great amount of information we get! I think we must watch TV to be well informed. It gives wonderful possibilities for education. Besides there is a considerable variety of programmes. We can choose what we want to see. I think it's important to read newspapers and magazines too. Educated person needs more information watching TV or reading newspapers and magazines. We've worked a lot. Let's have a short rest.. Now we can see a fragment of a feature film «Titanic».
