II. Мультимедийная презентация «Australia».
Australia is a fascinating country. It is full of strange and wonderful places, unusual animals and amazing culture. Listen to some facts about the Land Down Under. Australia is an island, a continent and a country. It's the world's largest island and its smallest (but oldest!) continent. And it's the only country that has a whole continent to itself! However, a lot of it is empty. There are only 20 million people, and most of them live in the eight large cities.
Australia is the flattest and second driest (after Antarctica) continent. Two-thirds of the land is desert. In some places it sometimes doesn’t rain for years! The driest and hottest place in Australia is the Simpson Desert. Summer temperatures here can be more than 50°C. The Simpson Desert is famous for its parallel sand dunes. They are the biggest in the world. The most famous dune, Big Red, is 40 metres high. The flat hot centre of Australia is called the 'outback’. The outback is more than two-thirds of Australia, but only 100,000 people live there. Sometimes, the nearest neighbour is a hundred kilometres away! Most children in the outback use the Schools of the Air. The teachers speak to them by radio, and they send them their homework by post!
Australia lies in the Southern Hemisphere, so everything there is the other way round. Hot winds blow from the north; cold winds blow from the south. The farther north you go, the hotter it gets. Summer starts in December, winter starts in June. So Christmas and New Year in Australia are celebrated in summer!
One of the most beautiful things you can see in Australia is Uluru. This huge rock is 348 metres high and 348 kilometres long, but what you see of Uluru is the tip of the iceberg. There are another 2,100 metres under the ground. Uluru is 600 million years old. The best time to see it is at the end of the day, when its colour changes from yellow to gold, red and then purple. Uluru is a sacred place for Australia's native people, the Aborigines. They believe that it's full of spirits that created the world. Lakes are usually cool and wet - but not in Australia. The big lakes in the desert are dry most of the time.
Lake Eyre, which is 70 kilometres wide and 130 kilometres long, has been filled with water only four times over the last hundred years! Rivers, too, are often dry. The River Todd, which runs through Alice Springs, is nearly always dry, but it doesn't discourage Australian people. Every September, there is a boat race in Alice Springs. The boats, however, are special. They have sides but no bottoms and are powered by feet! Hundreds of people come to Alice Springs to see this crazy race.
There are lots of strange and unusual animals in Australia. Many of them – the kangaroo, koala, echidna, and platypus - are found nowhere else in the world. Probably the most famous of them is the kangaroo.
Actually, there are 60 kinds of kangaroo in Australia. The biggest one is the red kangaroo. It can be more than 2 metres tall and weigh 90 kg. There are more than 100,000 crocodiles in the seas and rivers of northern Australia. Saltwater crocodiles are the world's largest reptiles and are aggressive and dangerous. Sometimes they attack people! The eucalyptus tree once grew only in Australia, but has now spread all over the world. The name eucalyptus was given to the tree by one of the scientists who went with Captain Cook on his great voyage of discovery. The Australians call it a gum tree. There are 700 kinds of eucalyptus in Australia. Some of them are so strong that they don't die during forest fires!
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world and the only living thing on our planet that can be seen from space! There are more than 1,500 kinds of fish and 400 types of coral in the Great Barrier Reef. No place on land has a greater variety of sea life! Tasmania is cooler and wetter than the rest of Australia, with high mountains and the world's oldest forests.
It is said that Tasmania has the cleanest air in the world. Some people say that when they in the Pinnacles Desert, they feel like they're on the moon. That feeling comes from the thousands of oddly shaped, huge limestone pillars that spot the yellow sands of the desert. The limestone was formed hundreds of thousands of years ago when the area was rich in sea life.
Canberra, the capital of Australia, is the newest city of all. It was designed by Walter Burley Griffin, an American architect, in 1912, and became the capital in 1927. Unlike other capitals, it's very, very quiet. There ate lots of trees and a big lake in the centre. Canberra is an Aboriginal word, meaning 'meeting place'.
Founded in 1788, Sydney is Australia's oldest city. Its first settlers were British prisoners, women as well as men, who had been sent to this wild land as a punishment. Today, Sydney is the largest city in Australia. It is also home to one of the country's most famous landmarks, the Sydney Opera House. The roof of this beautiful building looks like sails on Sydney Harbour. Near the Opera House is one of the largest bridges in the world - the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Melbourne, the second largest city, was once the capital of Australia. Today, it's the 'sporting capital' of the country. Australians have their own kind of football, called 'Aussie rules'. The game is unique in the world. It's played by teams of 18 players on an oval field with an oval ball, like a rugby ball. Unlike normal football or rugby, however, the ball can be passed in lots of ways: kicked, hit with the hand and carried. On the day of the final Aussie rules match, in September each year, everything stops in Melbourne.
Coober Pedy is a small town in South Australia, but it is known as the 'opal capital of the world'. 95 percent of the world's opals are mined there. But it's very dry and hot -40°-50°C for days at a time. So most people live under the ground in houses that are dug out of the rock. And tourists who come to Coober Pedy prefer to stay at underground hotels. The Aboriginal name Coober Pedy actually means 'white man in a hole'. Everything is unusual in Australia, even the food. Only in Australia can you find a kangaroo pie, a crocodile steak or smoked ostrich. No matter how far from Europe Australia can be, many people who are fond of travelling would like to visit this land because it is such an extraordinary place to explore!
