1. Приветствие.
- Good morning, boys and girls. How are you today? How many subjects do you have today? Do you like these subjects? Do you like your school?
Let’s discuss the attitude of modern pupils to school on today’s lesson. For successful discussion I would like you to study the words and word combinations from exercise 1.
I think it’s true/I think you’re right. In my opinion it’s true. I agree with you (one hundred percent) I’m all for it. I’m positive. I believe so, too. |
Maybe, it’s true. It depends. Sometimes it’s true, sometimes not. I don’t know. Not always. |

2. Let’s start our discussion and answer the questions from exercise 2.
Do you like school? Why? (It’s fun/boring, I can meet friends there, you must get up early, too much homework, the teachers are friendly, ...)
Have you got lots of friends at school?
Why do children go to school (because they want to be clever, because they want to have a good job in the future, because they have many friends there, because they like the teachers/lessons, ...)?
3. Not only you but almost every person in the modern world goes to school. There are some quotations of such people, say if they are true or false for you. Justify your opinion.

4. Let’s work in groups and study and make use of the following words and expressions. If you don’t know the meaning of any word, let’s discuss it together (exercise 4)
School subjects: optional, compulsory, Maths, English, Russian, Geography, Biology, Science, Chemistry, Technology, Algebra, Geometry, Art, Music, Reading, Psychology, Sociology, History, Drama, P.E. (Physical Education), I.T. (Information Technology).
School routines: to go to school, to go home, to have ... lessons a day, to finish school, to have lunch/a break, a packed lunch, to leave school, to cut/miss classes, to walk out of school, to be ill, to stay from school, to meet with friends after school, to get good/bad marks, to study in the ... th form, to take/pass exams, to have tests.
Extracurricular activities: to visit a Drama club/ a school choir/ an Art club/ a chess club, to have dancing/ singing/ English/ extra lessons, to do karate/judo, to go swimming, to play in a school football/basketball team.
Qualities:
- positive: interesting, fun, exciting, fantastic, nice, outstanding, clever, intelligent.
- negative: boring, tiring, depressing, unjust, frightening.
School things and classroom objects: a classroom, a pencil, a pen, crayons, paper, a book, a ruler, scissors, a notebook, an eraser/a rubber, a pencil sharpener, a desk, a board, a computer, a chair, a pencil case, a calculator, a glue, paint, a paintbrush, a school bag, a marker, a class, a teacher, a student, a pupil.
5. Let’s do the next exercise and complete the sentences with the following phrases:
packed lunch, get good marks, go home, cut, Chemistry:
- After school I _______________ and do my homework. Then I go for a walk with my friends.
- I love History and always ______________ for my answers. It’s like travelling in time.
- I never have lunch in a school canteen (столовая). I prefer a __________.
- You can’t pass exams with excellent marks if you __________ classes.

6. Look at the pictures in your papers and try to guess what people say in these situations at school. Fill in the speech bubbles:
- This is Tom, a new student. Let’s say “Hello, Tom”.
- May I go out?
- Can I ask you a question?
- Who can answer my question?
- Open/Close your books.
- Can you help me?
7. Work in pairs and match English and Russian equivalents. Then we’ll check it together:
1. Если ты обожаешь футбол и любишь в него играть, вступай в нашу школьную футбольную команду.
Can I borrow a pen? Mine doesn’t write.
2. В американских школах пять обязательных предметов. Остальные предметы дети выбирают.

8. Do you know anything about schools and education in the English-speaking countries? When do children start school? How long do they study? Do they wear a uniform? Do they have tests and examinations? What marks can they have? How many subjects have they got? Let’s watch the presentation “Schools in Great Britain and the USA”. Which school would you like to go to? Why? Are they similar to Russian schools?
9. If you want you can ask your teacher question about school, for example:
- Did you like going to school when you were a child? Why?
- Did you have lots of friends at school?
- Did you often miss classes? Were you a good student?
- What was your favourite subject? Why?
- Do you miss school days?
