Today we are going to speak about inventions. Famous and not so famous, well-known and not.
II. Warm-up 1.
Brainstorming around the quotations.

S1. I’d like to speak about an aeroplane. I suppose, it is one of the most important inventions of the Mankind. For centuries people had been dreaming about wings and at last their dream became a reality. The first aeroplane in the world was built in Russia in 1881 by Alexander Mozhaisky, a very good engineer in the Russian army. The aeroplane was not very large. It was only fif­teen metres long and had two wings. It was made of metal, wood and canvas and had a motor which was also constructed by Mo­zhaisky.
From 1882 to 1885 Mozhaisky made several flights in his aero­plane. In the United States, twenty-two years after Mozhaisky’s first flight, the two Wright brothers built an aeroplane with a motor. They flew up in it for the first time in 1903. Russia is the country that gave the world the first aeroplane pi­lots Sergey Utochkin and Pyotr Nesterov.The names of the Soviet constructors: Tupolev, Ilyushin, Yakovlev, Lavochkin and others. After World War II the USSR became one of the greatest aviation countries in the world.

S2. I’d like to speak about cloning. Scientists all over the world have been studying the problem for a long time. The first successful experiments had been fulfilled by John Gordon, an English scientist, by 1980.
A great tribute to the solution of the problem was made by a group of Scottish scientists, headed by Ian Wilmut. In 1997 the first cloned animal, the sheep Dolly was born. As a matter of fact, in 1998-1999 Dolly gave birth to 4 lambs, all of them were safe and sound. But Dolly herself began very quickly getting on and died.
The world’s first cloned pet, Copy Cat, has turned out to be very different from her mother, Rainbow. Their DNA is exactly the same and everybody expected Copy Cat to be the exact copy of her mum. But she isn’t. Rainbow (left) has got brown, white and gold fur. Copy Cat (right) has a striped grey coat.
And their personalities are different too: Rainbow is quiet but Copy Cat is playful and curious. Scientists prove that clones don’t always turn out to be exact copies.
The works like those are being carried out in Russia as well, but not so successfully. On the whole the technology of cloning is just being developed. But one thing is known for sure – human intellect can’t be cloned.
The problem of man cloning has both technological and ethics problems. On the one hand it would give the Mankind the possibility of getting new lungs, hearts, livers, kidneys and so on due to cloning and not due to donors, on the other hand…
Officially, man cloning is persecuted by the law in the USA, France, Germany and Japan.

Some inventions do not shake the world, but they make our life more comfortable. Imagine, that a ballpoint pen had not been invented, what are we to write with?

S3. We’d like to speak about some inventions, connected with clothes. They do not shake the world but they make our life more comfortable, more interesting and funnier.
A shoe that changes from stilettos into flats at the push of a button has been created for women drivers.
This cool Airplane dress was created by Hussein Chalayan. The famous designer was obviously inspired by flight technology. The dress is made from the same material used in aircraft. Believe it or not, but it changes shape by remote control!
This suit shows a ‘journey’ through physical and computer environments. Artist Jen Southern loves computer games and picked his favourite scene from one.
The tiny tubes in this dress can carry smells. You can choose any smell you like and change it to suit your mood.
This is the warmest and lightest jacket you’ve ever seen! To create it, the designers sewed bags of powdered Aerogel – one of the lightest substances on earth – between two layers of fabric.
This is a raincoat that glows in the rain. The circles are sensors. When droplets fall on a sensor, the lamp lights up. The harder the rain, the faster the lamps light up.
This jacket will help you survive in conditions of extreme heat. It has 50 metres of plastic tubing sewn into it! The first shoes were made by the Ancient Egyptians but there was no difference between the left and the right foot.
In the 18th century, the streets of Europe were so filthy and full of rubbish that people started wearing platform shoes to avoid stepping into the dirt!
The word umbrella is Italian and it means ‘a little shade’. However, the Italians didn’t invent the umbrella. It was used many centuries ago in the East as a protection against the sun. In Britain, it appeared in 18th century and it was used more as a protection against the rain. Jonas Hanaway is thought to be the first man to appear in the streets of London with an umbrella. The Londoners were so grateful to Jonas Hanaway that when he died they erected a monument to him in Westminster Abbey.
A Japanese professor has invented an invisibility cloak – just like Harry Potter’s. A camera on the back of the person’s head films the scene behind them and project it onto the coat. The technology has practical applications: in the future, doctors could see ‘through’ their hands or other obstacles when they are doing surgery. Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry Potter in the films, would love to try it. ‘I could sneak into top-secret meeting,’ he says.
