Ход урока

1. Организационный момент. Сообщение темы и целей урока.

T: Good morning, boys and girls! Good morning, our guests!

Pleased to meet you.

Our today’s lesson is devoted to art. We are going to speak about different kinds and styles of painting, the art influence on people. (slide 1)

2. Разминка.

T: We’ll start our lesson with a quotation. Its author is the great French and Spanish painter Pablo Picasso: “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” (slide 2).

How do you understand these words? Do you agree with them?

I’d like to start talking about art with the discussion of the story “Art for Heart’s Sake”. (slide 3)

Let’s remember the main points of the story.

P: The story “Art for Heart’s Sake” was written by Reuben Lucius Goldberg, an American sculptor, cartoonist and writer. The plot of the story centers around an old man Collis

P. Ellsworth who has troubles with his health when his financial transactions end in failure. In order to find for him a new interest Doctor Caswell offers him to take up painting, just for pleasure. And it was a great surprise when Ellsworth’s awful painting was not only accepted for the Show at the Lathrop Gallery, but took the First Prize!

The problems raised in the story are actual nowadays – money can buy everything, art is eternal.

But everybody values it from one’s own point of view.

3. Тренировка монологической речи.

T: I think it’s interesting to present this story on the part of the main characters of the story, let’s say, Doctor Caswell and the student Frank Swain.

P1 and P2 tell the story on the part of the main characters of the story.

T: Ellsworth tried to prove to everybody that business is more important than art, that money can buy everything. Did he succeed?

What do you consider more important? What is more satisfying art or business?

What do you think he will do with the Gallery later?

There is an English proverb “Art is long, life is short”. Explain it.

Why do people need art?

4. Вопросы для обсуждения:

Read the words of the remarkable French writer Marcel Proust about art.

“Only through art can we get outside of ourselves and know another’s view of the universe which is not the same as ours and see landscapes which would otherwise have remained unknown to us like the landscapes of the moon. Thanks to art, instead of seeing a single world, our own, we see it multiply until we have before us as many worlds as there are original artists... And many centuries after their core, whether we call it Rembrandt or Vermeer, is extinguished, they continue to send us their special rays”.

T:

Is this quotation close to your understanding of art?

Do like exploring art galleries?

How do you learn about art: read books, go to exhibitions, talk to artists?

Who is your favourite artist? Why do you admire his painting?

Why does man create works of art? What is the meaning of art?

It’s not easy to give answers to these questions, but we’ll try...

What is art? (slide 4)

Why does man create works of art?

What is the meaning of art?

5. Развитие лексических навыков.

The teacher’s questions:

Now we’ll remember some other terms referring to art. (slides 5-14)

Name different kinds of painting, give their characteristics. (slide 15)

What are your preferences in painting genres?

What genre emotionally moves you most?

Match each name of painting genres with pictures (slides 16-20).

How did different styles in painting appear?

T: Humanity developed and means of expressing one’s feelings developed, too.

What styles in painting can you name? (Realism, Impressionism, Abstract Painting, Cubism, Pop Art)

Give these styles a short description. (slides 21-27)

What representatives of this art style do you know?

Who is the brightest representative of this style?

Classicism – architects – Bazhenov, Каzakov, Wren, painters – Poussin, Raphael, Michelangelo.

The Realist artists of the mid-19th century created objective portraits depicting ordinary people(French painters Gustave Courbet Honorh Daumier Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec).

The representatives of Russian realism are the Wanderers (Peredvizhniki) Repin, Surikov, Shishkin. The Wanderers, were a group of Russian realist artists who in protest at academic restrictions formed an artists' cooperative; it evolved into the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions in 1870.

Pop Art – Andy Warhol

2) Отработка идиоматических выражений. (slide 35)

We cannot talk about painting without talking about colours.

As the German phychologist David Katz said

The word “colour” goes into a number of idioms.
