Seasons and Weather

There are four seasons in a year – spring, summer, autumn and winter. The spring months are March, April and May. In the central part of Russia spring is usually mild and warm, but in March there is still a lot of snow in the fields and woods, and the first part of March may be cold. The snow begins to melt in March. In April the sun warms the earth and in the southern parts of Russia everything starts to blossom. May is usually a warm month everywhere. It is the busiest time for farmers.

Summer begins in June and lasts till September. It’s the best season for many people. Because there is no school, most people are on holiday and it’s the time of leisure. The hottest month is usually July. People often spend their weekends out of town where they can swim and get sunburnt, go fishing or hunting mushrooms. There may be warm summer showers in July after which the air is fresh and full of pleasant smells. August is sometimes rainy, but it is still warm and the trees are still green.

The autumn months are September, October and November. In September the sun shines less brightly and leaves start to fall. There are a lot of autumn flowers. The colours in the gardens and in the woods are wonderful – yellow, green and red. It’s the most beautiful season of the year, but it doesn’t last long. October and November may be rainy and cold, and a strong wind may blow. In the central part of Russia November is already a cold month. Rivers and lakes are frozen, there is a lot of snow everywhere.

The coldest time in winter is in January. The temperature may be about 25 degrees below zero. Winter months are best for skiing and skating. In December the days are the shortest in the year and the nights are the longest. In February snowdrifts begin, but it’s usually a little warmer than in January.
