Цели урока.

  • Тренировать учащихся в употреблении лексических единиц по теме “Америка”.
  • Развивать навыки устной речи по теме урока.
  • Развивать навыки аудирования связного текста и навыки устной речи на основе прослушанного текста.
  • Обобщить изученный материал по теме “Америка”.
  • Ознакомить с дополнительным страноведческим материалом по теме “Символы и праздники в Америке”.
  • Развивать творческие способности детей.
  • Воспитывать уважение к традициям других народов.

  • Верещагина И. Н., Афанасьева О.В. Английский язык: учебник для 4 класса школ с углубленным изучением английского языка – урок № 51-52.
  • Звукозапись № 90, 78.
  • Картинки, рисунки детей по теме “День Благодарения в Америке”, “Символы России”, сувениры – символы России и Америки
  • Презентация “Америка. Символы и праздники”.

Ход урока

Оргмомент. Постановка цели.

- Today we’ll go on an imaginary journey to America. We shall sum up what we have learnt about America, its symbols, holidays and everyday life.

There is a very popular song in America.

Some people want it to become the national anthem.

The song praises the whole country.

Katherine Lee Bates is the author of the song.

She was impressed by a wonderful view of the mountains and the sky while travelling in Colorado.

O beautiful for spacious skies,

for amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Until the end of his life Columbus thought that he had discovered a new way to India.

That is why the American mainland was called West Indies at that time.

In 1507 the mapmaker Martin Waldseemuller named South America after Amerigo Vespucci.

Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian businessman. He made three voyages to America from 1499. He proved that the land called India by Columbus was not India at all. It was a new continent.

The American bald eagle was adopted as the official emblem of the United States of America in 1782.

The bald eagle was chosen because of its beauty, great strength, long life, and because it's native to North America.

In the wild, an eagle will live 30-35 years (up to 50 years in captivity).

A full-grown Bald Eagle has a wingspan of up to 7 foot. They fly up to 30 miles an hour and can dive at 100 miles an hour!

Historians are not sure how the character “Uncle Sam” was created.

Many think it was named after Samuel Wilson.

Samuel Wilson of Massachusetts (1766-1854) served as a drummer boy and then as a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

Later he was a businessman and in 1812 supplied the US army with beef in barrels. On the barrels letters “US” were written. One of the workers once said that US stood for Uncle Sam Wilson. So the nickname “Uncle Sam” appeared.

The rose was designated the official flower and floral emblem of the United States of America in 1986.

- Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore is in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It show the faces of the four American Presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. It is a memorial designed by an American sculptor, Gutzon Borglum. It is taller than the Great Pyramid of Egypt and is the world's greatest mountain carving.

- The White House

The White House is the home of the President of the United States. Whoever is President lives and works there until someone else becomes President.

It is located in Washington.

President and Mrs. John Adams became the first family to live in the White House in 1800.

The British burned the mansion down during the War of 1812, but it was rebuilt.

Throughout the years, 43 presidents have made some of the most important decisions in history while living in the White House.

  • 9/11 is how the worst terrorist attack on the USA is called. It happened on September 11th, 2001.
  • Two planes with terrorists on board flew into the Twin Towers in New York.
  • Almost three thousand people were killed in the attack.
  • It was a great shock for people not only in America.
  • A week later president George Bush declared war on terrorism.
