When was Queen Victoria born?

When did she die? (Students’ answers).

4. Presentation and discussion.

(slide 3) Victoria inherited the throne at the age of 18, she became a national icon, and was identified with strict standards of personal morality. Victoria was the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death in 1901 and the period of Queen Victoria‘s reign is known as the Victorian era.

How long did the Victorian era last? (Students’ answers).

(slide 4) Her reign of 63 years and 7 months, which is longer than that of any other British monarch and the longest of any female monarch in history was a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military change within the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire.

Look at the map and say what colonies the Brinish Empire possessed at that time (Students’ answers).

(slide 5). Some great events occurred and some important inventions were made in the Victorian era.

Comment the information. (Students’ answers).

(slide 6) She married her cousin, Prince Albert, in 1840.

(slides 7, 8) They were happy, and loved each other dearly and their marriage was the example of the family life. Albert tried to treat his children as equals; they realized instinctively not only that he loved them but that he enjoyed and needed their company.

They had nine children and they married into royal and noble families across the continent, tying them together and earning Victorian the nickname "the grandmother of Europe".

(slide 9) A man of progressive and liberal ideas, Albert not only led reforms in university education, welfare, the royal finances and slavery, he had a special interest in applying science and art to the manufacturing industry. He opened The Great Exhibition, the first in a series of World's Fair exhibitions of culture and industry.

When and where did it take place? (Students’ answers).

(slide 10) Look at the screen and share the information about the exhibition. (Students’ answers).

(slide 11) After Albert's death in 1861, Victoria plunged into deep mourning and avoided public appearances. Victoria wore black for the rest of her long life, and Albert's rooms in all his houses were kept as they had been, even with hot water brought in the morning, and linen and towels changed daily.

(slides 12, 13) Despite Albert's request that no effigies of him should be raised, many public monuments were erected all over the country, and across the British Empire. The most notable are the Albert Memorial and the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Have you ever heard about Royal Albert Hall?

What is it famous for? (Students’ answers)

(slide14) Since its opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the world's leading artists from several performance genres have appeared on its stage.
