Ход урока
I. Организационный момент
T: Good afternoon, everybody. Glad to see you. Sit down, please. I hope you’re well today. Are you ready to start working? Well, let’s begin.
II. Мотивация
T: Look at the screen, please and guess what we are going to speak about? (Слайд 1 в Приложении 4)
Примерные ответы:
P1: We’ll speak about the White House in Washington D. C. and American presidents.
P2: Perhaps we’ll make an excursion in the White House.
P3: Maybe we’ll speak about the people who can succeed in politics.
P4: I think we’ll learn some curious facts.
T: Yes, you’re right. The topic of our lesson today is “The White House in Washington D.C.” You have a chance to learn much interesting information about the White House and some fun facts about the White House residents.
“I Pray Heaven to Bestow on THIS HOUSE and on ALL that shall hereafter Inhabit it. May none but Honest And Wise Men ever rule under This Roof,” wrote John Adams to his wife on the day after he had moved into the White House. (Слайд 2)
The White House attracts many people from all over the world. Some foreigners think that the White House is only the place where the American presidents work. However it’s a place which has a long history and we can visit it as a museum.

T: Now we are going to work in the groups.

T: We’ve made your home groups. Each pupil of the group should read one of the extracts from the book by Kate Waters and take True-False test.

T: Meet in your expert groups:
– compare your answers for the test;
– work out a common answer;
– tell what you’ve learnt about the White House

T: Meet in your home groups again:
– take turns in retelling the story you’ve prepared;
– explain your group-mates the details;
– as you listen to your group-mates don’t forget to make notes.

In the whole class
T: Many people know that the White House is a symbol of the USA. What makes it be a symbol of the country? Explain your point of view. While listening to your classmates be ready to give some more reasons to support the point of view being discussed.

T: I appreciate your good work very much. You’ve filled the checking lists. Hand them to me, please.

T: The White House has grown and changed as the country has grown and changed. And every president who has lived there has left his mark. But do you know who was one of the most respected and devoted American presidents? If not, do the crossword and you will know him.
T: Who is he? Yes, you’re right. George Washington. His role in American history is very important. He is their national hero. We’ll continue to speak about the White House residents at the next lesson.
IV. Домашнее задание
T: So your homework will be to read “Fun Facts to Know about the White House Residents”, find the most curious things and be ready to tell us about them.

T: You have learnt much interesting things today, haven’t you? Everybody worked very hard and can be praised today. Why do you think your work was effective and cheerful?
