I. (См. Презентацию – Приложение 2, слайд 1-2) Many teachers today find their job more and more challenging and backbreaking. Many are not satisfied with their salary. Besides, they find teaching less rewarding and satisfying because of the new generation of students. New rules and regulations, lots of paper work, the problems of students’ discipline and lack of attention, and what not. Who would still like to work at school? (Слайд 3)So today we are the participants in the workshops for teachers who have decided to change their job. The idea of our workshops is “A NEW JOB – A NEW LIFE”. Experienced psychologists and career advisers will help them to make up their minds. (Слайд 4)

II. First let’s get acquainted. Turn to your right neighbour and ask his/her name and if she feels tired after a day of teaching. Do most of us feel tired now?

III. (Ознакомление и активизация лексики) (Слайд 5)

1. To organise the work of our workshops we need some terms. Let’s study them and make sure we understand them in the same way.

have your own business

make a career

make a fortune

make a living

make a mistake

get promotion

get the sack

do well

do your best

do something about it

Which of these things are impossible or next to impossible/very hard for teachers?

It’s impossible to make a fortune/have your own business.

It’s very hard to get promotion/make a career/do well.

What often happens to teachers?

They make mistakes and get the sack.

They do their best but can hardly make a living.

So we have to do something about it!

IV. The teachers who have come here have decided to change their jobs. But why? What do you dislike in teaching? Let’s find out why the people present want to quit teaching (Слайд 6):

I want to change my job because (teaching is too/not very...)

backbreaking

exhausting/tiresome

dangerous

monotonous

boring

time-consuming

full time not respected

satisfying/fulfilling

rewarding

creative

challenging

exciting

pleasant

prestigious

V. (Чтение)

The first important thing to do is to study the job market. (Слайд 7) A career adviser who unfortunately couldn’t attend our workshops himself, has sent us his survey about the situation on the job market in Russia. Let’s look through it quickly to see what professions have good employment prospect, are in demand, are overcrowded.

Look through the article quickly and answer the questions. To save out time the groups will look for different information in the article and then tell the others.

How do you choose your career? Many Russian school-leavers begin college without a clear idea of what they want to do. There seem to be so many possible jobs and careers that it's difficult to make a decision. There are hundreds of different occupations but some of them are already overcrowded. In old industries, there may be little need for new workers, while new and growing industries can offer good jobs.

According to recent surveys, the fastest growing job opportunities in Russia are for economists and accountants. Engineers specializing in IT and computer programmers come second. Today there is also a great need for marketing and advertising specialists as well as sales managers and various kinds of designers. As there are very few professional administrators, the need for people with this kind of qualification is growing very fast.

Other industries and professions have changed in the last ten years. Chemical, construction and food industries were in decline a decade ago but today engineers qualified in these fields are in great demand. On the other hand, the need for new lawyers (a popular career choice in the 90s,) is less today, as it is an overcrowded profession.

  1. What professions have good employment prospects?
  2. What professions are in demand?
  3. What professions are overcrowded?

So what have you learnt?

  • Economists and accountants, engineers specializing in IT and computer programmers have good employment prospects.
  • Marketing and advertising specialists, sales managers and designers, professional administrators, engineers qualified in chemical, construction and food industries are in demand.
  • Lawyer is an overcrowded profession.

VI. (Диалогическое высказывание)

Some psychologists are helping us choose a new occupation that will suit us. To find out what job will suit us best the first thing he must do is to find out what we are like, what qualities we possess. What do you think teachers’ main merits, positive traits are? (Слайд 8)

We are creative because we often have to make up and invent different things to make our lessons better. We are patient because we have to put up with our students’ bad behavior. etc.

creative confident dynamic
flexible hardworking generous
helpful motivated organised
reliable sympathetic tolerant
patient sensitive friendly

Talk to as many people as possible, say what you are like and why you need this quality.

So what are we like? Do you think people with these merits can do well in any job?

VII. (Аудирование. См. Приложение 1) (Слайд 9)

We have invited some representatives of different professions to know more about different jobs. We want to know how these people make their living, what their promotion and career prospects are, what they like and dislike about their jobs.

One of those we invited, a police officer Sandra Gimenez, a detective in the New York Police Department, couldn’t be her, so we interviewed her. Listen and answer the questions:

What does Sandra do for a living?

Does she have good promotion and career prospects?

What does she like about her job?

Does she want to quit? Why (not)?

- Why did you decide to be a police officer?

- My family comes from the Bronx so I know the problems caused by crime. I once saw a mugging in my neighbourhood and my older brother had problems with drugs. I didn't want to just sit there and do nothing. So I joined the NYPD.

- What do you do now?

- Well, now I'm working in homicide. But I have only been here since last year. We've had some difficult cases. We're working on a big case now b can't tell you about it.

- Have you ever been in any danger?

- Yes. Last month, we were looking for a suspect near a gas station. We saw an individual fitting the description. When we tried to arrest him, he pulled a gun on us. I had to shoot but I didn't hurt him badly. Yesterday, I received a bravery award for it

- Do you like your job?

- The people in the department are great and I like my work. In this job, no day is the same, you know. But it's stressful and my family worries about me all the time. Today I spoke to my mom about it. I'm going to stop doing it after I get married next year. I won't feel the same about taking risks. If we have children, I'll try to get a different job in the department.

VIII. (Полилогическое высказывание – в тройках)

Some people, luckily, have come to talk to us and now you have a chance to ask them about their jobs. We have invited. (Слайд 10)

IX. (Монологическое высказывание)

So now we have learnt a lot and can finish up our workshop and make some conclusions.

(Слайд 12) Katherine Whitehorn, a British journalist once gave such advice for the young.

‘Find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it.’ Katherine Whitehorn

But suddenly when we are nearly ready to make a decision the manager of our workshops turns up. He announces that there are some financial problems and so only half of the teachers present can actually get a new job. So she says “Are you sure you really want to quit teaching? Maybe there still is something attractive for you in it?

Now looking back at the description of different jobs, our criteria, the list of jobs available, what would you choose? Would you prefer to remain a teacher, or would you rather be something else? (Слайд 13)

As for me, I’d really like to remain a teacher. Though I know I won’t make a brilliant career because there are no good career prospects and I will never make a fortune but I can make a living. I think I can do well because I’ve always had the right qualities - I’m patient, creative and organised enough. I still think teaching is challenging, and I like the challenge, and rewarding – though it’s more and more difficult to be satisfied with the fruit of your work. Besides, I’m sure teaching is my vocation. I really enjoy teaching, it gives me pleasure and the feeling of being needed. We know that in Moscow English teachers are in demand. So in spite of all stress and doubts, I’d better be a teacher! (Слайд 14)
