Ход урока

1. Организационный этап (3 мин)

Today our lesson is devoted to a very important problem. As Kent Conrad said: «Access to computers and the Internet has become a basic need for education in our society». I fully agree with his words and what about you? Is your life impossible without computers? Why? What do you think about it?

Nowadays, we cannot imagine our life without computers and the fact is that they have become so important that nothing can replace them. Since 1948 when the first real computer has been invented our life has changed so much that we can call it real digital revolution.

And now I want to check how much you know about them. Open your books (p. 34, УМК «New Millennium»). There are 5 statements. Read them and decide which one is not true:

  1. The Internet was originally designed for military purposes.
  2. The first Internet café in Europe was London’s «Siberia».
  3. You can access the Internet via a mobile phone.
  4. Anybody can have their own webpage.
  5. You have to be over 16 to use the Internet.
  6. Parents can restrict what their children look at on the Internet.
  7. You can set up a business on the Internet from your own home.
  8. Your could meet your future husband or wife over the Internet.

And now answer my questions:

  1. How often do you use the Internet?
  2. What for?
  3. How far do you think it has changed or will change our lives?
  4. What advantages does it have?

Nevertheless, there are those who claim that computers are unnecessary and make our lives more complicated. They argue that in the past we managed very well using other methods and that we have become too dependent on computers.

2. Фонетическая зарядка (10 мин)

Now I’m going to give you «The Ode to the Spell Checker». It is also about computers. Look at the screen of the board.

After correcting its spelling be ready to answer my question: «What is one of the main functions of the computer?»

And now your task will be to correct the spelling in this poem. The pronunciation of some words is practically the same, but the spelling is different:

Eye have a spelling chequer
It came with my pea see
It clearly marks four my revue
Miss takes eye cannot sea.

Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight fore it too say
Weather eye am wrong or eye am right
It shows me strait a weight.

As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose be four two long
And eye can put the error rite
Its rare lea ever wrong.

Eye have run this poem threw it
I am sure your pleased two no
Its letter perfect all the weigh
My chequer told me sew.

Now answer the question: «What is one of the main functions of the computer described in this ode?»

3. Активизация лексического материал (15 мин)

Look at the screens of your computers and you will see the words, tell me your associations with these words. For example: Computer – the Internet. Bug, click, crash, memory, menu, mouse, notebook, virus, window. Tell me only the first association which come into your head. Don’t think over your answers.

But why did I take all these words? Right, because they meant absolutely different things 20 years ago.

A mouse – a small animal with a long tail that lives in people’s houses and fields.

A mouse – a small object connected to a computer by a wire, which you move with your hand to give commands to the computer.

I am going to give you 2 texts and we’ll see the obvious difference. Your task is to use the words given above in both texts, which have absolutely different plots and the words are given in different meanings.

Bug, click, crash, memory, menu, mouse, notebook, virus, window.

Text 1. We had a terrible evening. For a start, Peter was coming down with a … and he felt awful. We had to wait half an hour for our table, which was in the corner, even though I specifically asked for one next to the … and then another half-hour just to get the … . The waiter was useless. We had to ask for everything about three times and then he brought the wrong order anyway. I don’t know why he didn’t just write it down in a little …like they usually do. We’d just got the first course, which was actually quite good, when there was this huge … from the kitchen and the chef stormed out with a big ladle in his hand and started shouting and swearing at the waiter in front of all the customers. Frankly, I knew how he felt. But for me, the worst thing was just after the first course when we suddenly saw a … running across the floor, closely followed by the restaurant cat. Well, that was it for me. I couldn’t eat another thing. Peter struggled on until he found a bright green … in his tomato salad. Honestly, you should have seen his face! At that precise moment there was a … and a flash and I looked up to see a photographer. He’d just taken our picture. «Something to preserve your … of this evening?» he said. I’m not going to tell you what I said!

Text 2. I had a terrible evening. I got home late from work and still had a report to finish. As you know, my computer is rally old and slow – I really need to install more … . Anyway, when I tried to double – … on the file I wanted to work on, a … appeared telling me that the file could not be opened. So I decided to try opening it using a different programme but that only made my computer … completely. The screen went blank and the … froze. By this time, I was tearing my hair out – it was past midnight and I still hadn’t started working on this report. I phoned my computer guru friend, Matt, and he told me I probably had a … in my system. I must have got it from one of those stupid joke e-mail attachments – you know, like the «Love …» one. I had to resort to using my … but I hate the keyboard on it – it’s too small. At least I got my report finished. Matt’s going to send me some software to fix the problem. He also told me in future to go to the applications … and launch a good protection programme before opening unknown files. Good advice and better late than never, I suppose.

You see that our world changes day after day. There are changes not only in technologies and techniques, but also in the meanings of the words, in their spelling. Let’s look at these changes. On the screen of the board you will see the words, which entered English over the last 20 years. Your task is to match them with their definitions. Look at your screens:

1. Alcopop
2. Fashionista
3. Dotcom
4. Monged
5. Eco-friendly
6. Docusoap
a) a sweet or fruit drink with alcohol
b) a person employed in the creation of high fashion, as a designer, photographer, model, etc.
c) an Internet address for a commercial site
d) extremely intoxicated by drugs
e) not harmful for the environment
f) a television documentary series following people in a particular location or occupation over a period of time

4. Закрепление грамматического материала в ДР (13 мин)

A lot of changes happen in our life, but despite the fact that it is almost impossible to think that one can survive without computers, because they have become a garget of almost daily use for people of every age, there are people who can’t use it.

Now you’ll see it for yourselves. There are papers with the dialogue called «Computer Helpline» on your desks, where you task is to put the parts of the text in order and to change the following sentences into Indirect Speech. Work in pairs.

  • Assistant: Computer helpline. May I help you?
  • Caller: Well, yes.
  • Assistant: Yes, I’m afraid it is.
  • Caller: There isn’t any cursor. I can’t see anything here, because it’s dark.
  • Assistant: Tell them you are too stupid to own a computer.
  • Caller: Yes. I am having a problem with my new computer. I was typing a report, and suddenly the words disappeared.
  • Assistant: Dark?
  • Caller: Really? Is it so bad?
  • Assistant: What? OK. Do you still have the boxes your computer came in?
  • Caller: Well, all right. What should I tell them?
  • Assistant: What does your screen look like now?
  • Caller: It’s blank. It won’t accept anything when I type.
  • Assistant: Can you move your cursor around your screen?
  • Caller: Yes. The office light is off, and the only light I have is coming from the window.
  • Assistant: Good. Get them, pack your computer and take it back to the shop you bought it from.

Andy Rooney said: «Computers make it easier to do a lot of things, but most of the things they make it easier to do don't need to be done». Of course it has not only advantages, but also disadvantages. But all in all I strongly believe that computers are useful tools. They have changed our lives for the better and there is no reason why we should not make them work for our advantage.

5. Итоги урока (2 мин)
