Kind of the lesson: standard.

Level: grade 9.

Aim: By the end of the lesson students will be able to know new facts about the musical life of Great Britain.

Objectives:

  • Learning new facts about the world of the British music
  • Developing the ability of listening
  • Developing aural and visual memory, attention, logical thinking
  • Mastering the skill of asking and answering questions
  • Mastering the skill of fluent speech
  • Bringing up an esthetic pupils’ taste

Teacher: Good morning! Take your seats, please! I am glad to see you and I hope that all is OK with you and your families.

Teacher: The theme of our lesson is the World of the British Music. Today we are going to travel around the fascinating and charming world of the British music. We'll learn many interesting facts and you will try to express your ideas about them by asking and answering questions.

3. Warm-up activities 4 min. Teacher: Look at the slide and try to name famous British singers, composers, musicians.

Who of them do you admire most of all? Why?

Teacher: As you can see a lot of musical events: festivals, concerts are held in different parts of Great Britain. Some cities are connected with the names of famous musicians. We start our unforgettable journey about the world of the British music with Edinburgh. Look at the map. Where is the city situated?

Let's get acquainted with this festival.

2 min. Teacher: Edinburgh Festival is annual. It is held in August and it usually lasts for three weeks at various centers in Edinburgh. First held in 1947 the festival was devoted to the victory in the Second World War. Now the festival has gained international status and won a reputation for its experimental and “avant-garde” events. It consists of two parts: official and non-official one. Everybody can take part in the non-official part of the festival and get prizes there.

During the festival local citizens and tourists from different parts of the world can enjoy orchestra, opera, vocal music, watch ballet and theatrical performances, see evening parades of war orchestras and visit art exhibitions. The festival was included to the famous Guinness book for being the largest in the world.

1 min. Teacher: The second festival we are going to discuss is the Aldeburgh Festival. It takes place in Aldeburgh – in a town on the Suffolk Coast of England.

Teacher: The festival was founded in 1948 by the composer Benjamin Britten. The original intention was to provide a home for an opera company, but the vision was soon widened to include readings of poetry, literature, drama, lectures and exhibitions of art. The Aldeburgh Festival retains a unique character not only due to its location in rural Suffolk, but also due to its presentation of new music, new interpretations and the rediscovery of forgotten music.

Teacher: Of course, it's impossible to tell you everything about the cultural and musical life of this magnificent city. There are a lot of gorgeous musical events taking place in London. The most famous one is festival Proms which is usually held from the 15th of July to the 10th of September. It was started in 1904 to make the classical music popular and available for the public. The festival attracts a lot of tourists from all over the world and it continues serving to its main idea.

2 min. Teacher: Where does Eisteddfod Festival take place?

Teacher: Now it's time to tell you some facts about Eisteddfod Festival. It is an annual Welsh national bardic festival of music, literature and drama held during the first week of August. “Eisteddfod” literally means “a sitting” (“eistedd” in Welsh is “to sit”). The festival has developed from the gathering of bards held in the 12th century. So, the festival was started in 1176. It is conducted in Welsh and opened to the public. Its formal title is the Royal National Eisteddfod.

2 min. Teacher: Where was the famous British group Beatles born?

Teacher: The story of this group is the theme for the series of lessons. It’s difficult to tell about this group in some words because its contribution to the development of the world music is incredible. No doubt that the names of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr are known all over the world. First appeared in 1959 in Liverpool this group greatly influenced the musical life of Great Britain and the whole world. The experimental songs of this group, imaginative lyrics and catchy melodies conquered people’s hearts and souls.

The hit of this group “Yesterday” is among the tenth top hits of the 20th century.

2 min. Teacher: The story of the World of British music won’t be completed without the modern musical life. Emma Bunton, Will Young, Ozzy Osborne, Sir Cliff Richard, Paul McCarthy, Elton John, Joe Cocker, Lisa Lashes, groups Kiss, No doubt, Members compose their songs, take part in different concerts and musical festivals in the world. By the way, sometimes the Queen of the UK visits modern pop and rock concerts and deeply enjoys these performances.

Teacher: This information is brief information about the musical life in Great Britain. No doubt, it’s much more intensive, but you got a chance to make your impression about it. So, try to check your attention: ask each other questions in a chain about the musical life of Great Britain. But you must know the answer yourself to help your classmate to answer your question!

Pupils make a question (on a new material) and ask it to a classmate. A classmate must answer it. If a person can’t answer the question, a person who made the question must help to answer it.
