Dear colleagues, we are glad to welcome you at our seminar. We devote our performance to the person who had been connected with Tambov and had made much for development of musical art in our town.

We will tell you about well-known composer and the conductor, the author of an immortal and very popular march "Farewell of the Slavyanka" composed by V.I. Agapkin.

It is a photo of railway station in Tambov of the beginning of 20th century. At first sight you can't see anything outstanding, such stations were at each large railway junction in pre-revolutionary Russia. But at this station the march "Farewell of the Slavyanka" for the first time has sounded.

Certainly, it is a legend, and in this case, as well as with the first legend, it is impossible to find any documents, both confirming, and denying it.

Agapkin Vasily Ivanovich was born in the village Shancherovo of the Ryazan region (nowadays the city of Mihajlov) in a family of the farm laborer - the military conductor, the composer. Searching for a better lot, the family had moved to Astrakhan. . But the life was difficult in a new place. When Vasya was seven he was deserted and, to live, together with the sisters asked for a handout.

From 1894 he served in military orchestras as the regular musician.

Once the boy had seen military musicians among whom there were also boys of his age. According to the advice of one of them he had asked the stepmother for showing him to the conductor. So at the age of ten Vasya Agapkin became the pupil of a wind band of 308th infantry battalion standing in Astrakhan. Four years later he had been recognised as the best soloist-kornetist of a regiment. By this time Vasiliy Agapkin was 15 years old.

From 1894 he served in military orchestras as the regular musician.

In 1906 Agapkin was 22. He had been called in the army and after three-year service had decided to study music.

To enter Tambov musical school well-known in the country, Vasiliy Agapkin came to Tambov and on January, 12th, 1910 had been enlisted by the staff-trumpeter of the 7th spare cavalry regiment.

In 1910 Vasiliy dreamed to leave to Moscow and to study in conservatory. But the lack of money (still it was necessary to help younger sisters) compiled him to stop in Tambov. He was a staff-trumpeter in the 7th spare cavalry to a regiment.

Simultaneously he studied in the city musical school and then took a great interest in a composition.

In the autumn of 1911 he had been accepted on medno-wind branch in a class of the known composer in Tambov, the executor and teacher Feodor Kadichev. Feodor Mihajlovich had imparted to his talented pupil a basis of writing music and had trained in art of conducting by a wind band.

As the patriot and musician Vasily Agapkin had his own way how to respond events on the Balkans and in the end of 1912 had written a march which named "Farewell of Slavyanka". The author said that the march was devoted to the women-Slavs who were seeing off the sons, husbands and brothers on saicred protection of the Native land.

In 1915 he finished training, had been awarded ranks of the military conductor (the conductor of an orchestra), however he could receive a corresponding post only in 1917 after February revolution.

Agapkin was the conductor in 7th spare cavalry to a regiment till March, 20th, 1918 while the wave of reorganisation of old army had reached Tambov. For about four months Vasily Ivanovich had been supervising an orchestra at the Tambov union of orchestral musicians.

In July, 1918 he voluntary entered the Red hussar Warsaw regiment as the conductor and in the autumn together with it went on Southern front where was more than a year - when he knocked down a typhus.

In March 1920 Agapkin leaved to Tambov to his family for two months to get stronger after a serious illness.

In 1920 he became the conductor of an orchestra of 27th separate battalion ВЧК in Tambov and in a short period of time had made it the best orchestra among musical collectives. In short terms orchestras were headed by the talented conductor had mastered various and interesting repertoire then with a big success acted in Tambov.

In August, 5th, in 1922 Vasily Agapkin's orchestra had given a farewell concert. The newspaper "Tambov Truth" informed people about it.

Vasily Agapkin was buried in Moscow on the Vagankovsky cemetery. Initial steps of march "Farewell of the Slavyanka" are cut on a modest monument-stele to immortalize a name of ifs founder. The words "The Conductor-composer, colonel Vasily Ivanovich Agapkin. 1884-1964" burnt above.

In the summer of 1965 the participant of ensemble of a song and dancing of Far East military district A.Fedotov had written words on a march melody:

This march did not cease on platforms.
When the enemy covered horizon,
With it of our fathers in smoky cars
Trains carried away on front :

And if in a campaign
The country will call,
For edge our native,
All of us will go to sacred fight!

The march "Farewell of Slavyanka" became an official hymn of Krasnodar territory and Vasiliy Ivanovich Agapkin's native place - the Tambov region. This music sounds at stations, at descent of the ship to water, on parades, during wires on military service...

The march had been created for a military wind band, without words. All texts had appeared later. The march melody combines vivifying belief in the future victory and comprehension of bitterness of inevitable losses from future battles. In the march name one of the hardest tests which assign all wars to women is reflected, - to see off the men on war and to trust in their returning.

Use your imagination, and you can easily plunge into atmosphere of that time, a century ago. The Same building of the Tambov station, but other surroundings, and public on platform, military and civilian, dressed on a fashion of the left epoch, chilly muffling up in the coats on a cold autumn wind.

And the strict military orchestra executing a new march, despite of cold weather. And you are present there, standing in a crowd of spectators, with great attention for the first time hear exciting sounds of music, and think of the destiny of Russia and about the future...

After serfdom fell, Tambov has turned to a typical merchant city. The Ryazano-Ural railway made a big push in its development in 1869. It conducted to revival of trade in a city and the metalcutting enterprises.

Colourful fairs took place on this place many years ago. Now on the area near the station there is a remarkable square and the whole cascade of fountains. Here quite often it is possible to meet a newly-married couple just registered the marriage.

The plaster monument to I. V. Stalin, was on the area Near the station to the middle of 1950. Then it was reconstructed and now there is a beautiful fountain.
