III. Речевая разминка.

Most people in the world have some superstitions - they still live on in the age of science. Here are some British superstitions with long traditions. Some of them are similar to Russian ones others are different.

(Класс делится на две группы и получает карточки с написанными на них суевериями).

Put similar superstitions into the red box and different into the green one.

(Две парты, на каждой 1 красная коробка и 1 зеленая.)

IV. Проверка работы в группах.

Your time is up. Finish your work, please. Group number one, name similar superstitions.

P1. It's unlucky to spill salt. If you do, you must take a pinch and throw it over your left shoulder.

P2. It's bad to pick scissors that you've dropped,

P3. It's extremely unlucky to break a mirror. It means 7 years of bad luck.

P4. The number 13 is very unlucky and Friday the 13th is a very unlucky date.p5.

Group number two. do you agree with them?

Would you like to add something?

P1. Yes, I would. It's lucky to touch wood. If you feel you've said smth. that is tempting fate, touch some item of wood with the right hand.

Таким же образом проводится проверка знаний суеверий, которые отличаются от русских. В конце проводятся итоги игры.

I think both groups know English and Russian superstitions.

V. Введение страноведческой информации.

Тренировка навыков чтения (сканирования) и письма.

Scan a few extracts from books by British and American writers as quickly as possible. Write down the names of the characters, and what they believe in or what they are scared of?

Учащиеся получают тексты и карточки.

• It's extremely unlucky to walk under a ladder propped against a wall or building. But if you must pass under a ladder, you can avoid bad luck by crossing your fingers and keeping them crossed until you see a dog. Another remedy is to spit on your shoe and leave the spittle to dry.

• It's unlucky to spill salt. If you do, you must take a pinch and throw it over your left shoulder.

• It's very bad luck to open an umbrella in the house — it will either bring misfortune to the person who has opened it or to those who live in the house.

• It's unlucky to meet or pass someone on the stairs. If it's unavoidable, cross your fingers.

• It's unlucky to take the last piece of bread on the plate.

• It's bad luck to see one magpie. However, it's lucky to see two, etc.

• It's unlucky to put new shoes on the table.

• It's bad luck to pick up scissors that you've dropped.

• It's extremely unlucky to break a mirror. It means 7 years of bad luck.

• The number thirteen is very unlucky and Friday the 13th is a very unlucky date.

• Burning cheeks or ears mean someone is talking about you. It's a friend if your left cheek is burning. It's an enemy if your right cheek is burning.

• A black cat crossing your path will bring you good luck.

• A horseshoe over the door of a new house brings good luck. But it must be the right way up. The luck runs out of a horseshoe if it's upside down.

• Clover usually has three leaves, but a few have four. A clover with four leaves is supposed to bring good luck.

• It's lucky to touch wood. If you feel you've said something that is tempting fate, touch some item of wood with the right hand.

Учащиеся читают тексты и заполняют таблицы, которые зачитывают вслух.

1) "What else happened?"

Oh, leave it. You'll just think me a crazy female."

"Actually, I don't think you are a crazy female. It was really Pat I was being snotty with. It's the one thing I can't stand about her. Horoscopes, oui-ja-boards, telling fortunes by tealeaves, spiritualism — she is hooked on them all. She ought to grow up."

"Everyone's got funny little ways."

"Yeah," said Timmo.

(R.Westall* "The Watch House")

2) "Come Mail, make a charm with me," said Emmot. "I heard that to put a sixpence in the Book of Ruth,* and to put the Bible beneath the pillow and to sleep, is to dream of who will be husband. And see, I have found and kept a sixpence to try it."

"Oh, Emmot, should we?" I asked. "There is no truth in charms, Emmot, as I think, and this one but fond maid's foolishness."

"it is upon the Bible. Mall."

"And may be the worse for that."

(J.P. Wafsh* "A Parcel of Patterns")

3) Prudie had an infinite belief in good and bad luck. If she spilt salt, she really did threw some over her shoulder. Seeing one magpie had ruined many an outing. A dropped spoon meant a letter coming. If a picture fell off a wall, someone close was going to die. Sometimes people tried laughing her out of it; they never laughed twice.

(R. Westall "The Watch House")

4) Alma needed to have her palm read by a woman named Sister Rose. Alma said Sister Rose could tell you everything that would happen to you in your whole life. Sister Rose was never wrong. She had told Alma's cousin that she was going to have twins, a boy and a girl, and even the doctor hadn't believed it until they both popped out.

(B. Byars "Cracker Jackson")

5) "There is nothing to mind," she said to Nick as they trudged aiding the railway line. "What is there to be scared of? Just a few old trees."

Nick said nothing! only sighed.

Carrie said, "All that queer place stuff is just Auntie Lou being superstitious. You know how superstitious she is, touching wood and not walking * under ladders and throwing salt over her shoulder when she's spilled some. I'm not surprised Mr Evens gets cross with her sometimes. She's so scared, she'd Jump at her own shadow."

(N. Bawden "Carrie's War")
