ХОД УРОКА

I. Warm-up activities

T. Glad to see you safe and sound. I hope you are as ready today as usual. The idea of our lesson today is to practice comparing information and speaking. “I feel better today’’, ‘’Your problem is the same as mine’’ … … It seems to me that we are always comparing things. I would name our lesson today “I can't but compare''. Why do people like to compare?
P1. They like to choose and have to compare.
P2. When they boast or envy.
T. My opinion is that comparison helps to get true info about the world around us. Probably that’s why teachers  are fond of asking comparing questions.

II. Practice of using comparative  structures in questions  and translating proverbs.

T. So, now I want you to practice both asking  and answering questions with comparative structures. Take the cards and work in pairs.

1) House/ from school/ far?

P1. Whose house is the farthest from school?
P2. Oleg’s is. But one striking thing. The farther one lives, the less he is late.

2) To sleep/ long hours/ in our class?

P1. Who sleeps the longest hours in our class?
P2. Those, who are the laziest.

3) Difficult/ History/ Mass?

P1. Which of the 2 subjects is the more difficult?
P2. Mass is more difficult than History.

4) Perfect English/ __?___ way to?

P1. What is the best way to perfect English?
P2. In my opinion the best way to perfect English is reading.
T. I share your idea, but I think to master English we should translate as much as possible. The more correctly I can translate, the better I know the language. I want to prove it with your help. You have cards with proverbs and quotations, which contain comparative structures. Let us read them and translate.

1. A man is as old as he feels and a woman is as old as she looks.
2. The devil is not as black as he is painted.
3. Of the 2 devils choose the least.
4. Clever men are good, but they are not the best.
5. You must look into people as well as at them.
6. Imagination is as good as many voyages- and how much cheaper!
7. Good is a good doctor, but Bad is sometimes a better one.
8. It is wiser being good than bad.
9. The more we love our friends, the less we flatter them.

III. Discussion of home assignment (it was to compliment classmates).

T. Do you agree with the last quotation?
P1. I do. To flatter means to tell false compliments.
P2. I partly agree, but it is so pleasant  to receive a compliment, isn’t it?
T. Two lessons ago your home assignment was to compliment  your classmates. I have read all your papers with great pleasure. I am so happy that you respect and value each other. I want to read out some lines. You are sure to enjoy them.

Nikita A. – is nominated as the best smile of our class. He smiles twice as often as the rest of our class taken together.
Kseniya M. – is nominated as the best dancer. She dances as well as a professional dancer.
Olga K. – is nominated as the cleverest girl. She is as ready with her answers as our teachers with their questions.
Nadya T. – is nominated as the most well-read person. She reads many times as much as we do.
Alex Sh. – is nominated as the busiest boy. He is always as busy as a bee.

IV. Listening practice. Group discussion

T. By the way, what do you like best- to compare or to be compared?
P1. I like to compare because I want to have the best.
P2. I hate to be compared because every person has both weak and strong points.
T. What kind of people are afraid of being compared?
P3. I guess those, who don’t feel confident.
T. What phrases do we prefer not to hear?
P4. You are not so … as Helen.
P5. You are the least … person I have ever met.
T. Right you are. When people lack confidence they face a lot of problems. I want you to listen to one story. Your task is to listen to it and understand what problems this girl has.

SCRIPT

Hi! My name is Ann. I’m quite an average girl and I have some problems. I wish you could help me with useful tips. The matter is that it’s difficult for me to socialize with people. I’ve got a sister. She ia the same age as me. Olga is always in the center of attention though some people say that of the 2 sisters I’m the more beautiful. I work harder, I am always as busy as a bee to be first. But I have fewer friends than her. I am always being compared with her and it can’t but hurt me. I don’t understand why she is happier than me. What can I do to become more sociable? I’ll be grateful for any advice. Thanks. Ann.
T. What is Ann’s problem?
P1. Ann is a talented girl but she isn’t happy because she feels insecure.
T. Now your task is to produce a list of tips on how to be more confident. I want you to collaborate in groups by 4, exchange ideas. You’ll have 3-4 minutes. Choose somebody who’ll represent the result of your group work to the class.
_____ …. _______....______
T. Listen to each other attentively, don’t repeat the previous speaker
.
P1, P2, P3 … … .

– Try to be natural.
– Try to develop you’re your best qualities.
– Treat people in a kind way – they’ll pay you the same coin.
– Read books on psychology – they contain a lot of tips.
– Give your friends compliments.
– Wear bright clothes to feel more confident.
____....___....___....___....___....___....___
T. Thanks a lot. I see you can be very supportive. It’s very important to have a person to ask for advice.

 V. Dialogues

T. In everyday life we often have to choose. To make a right choice we compare things – which is the best/ the cheapest … … . Your home assignment for today was to think of such situations, where we have to choose comparing and asking for advice. You are welcome with your dialogues.

DIALOGUE № 1

– Morning, Dad!
– Hi, Alex! You look gloomier today than usual.
– Life is becoming more and more dangerous you know.
– Really? Is it as bad as your mark for the test last week?
– No, this time I’ve made twice as few mistakes as  it was previously.
– What mark did Sasha receive?
– Oh, no! I hate it when you compare us!!!
– I just want you to be a better student than him.
– Why? Do you mean to say that the better I’ll study, the more you’ll love me?
– Of course not. But all parents want their children to be the best.
– Then I understand Granny. She used to say that of the 2 sons her elder son was the cleverer.
– Did she? Never heard. What else did she say?
– But you were kinder, wittier and more sociable.
– You took after me, my dear! Why not go somewhere together?
– Probably to school? They want to see you.

DIALOGUE № 2

– Good morning, madam. Can I help you?
– Yes, please. I heard your shop is the best in this district and the choice is twice as rich as in other shops.
– How much can you afford?
– I don’t think that the more expensive, the better, but I can afford as much as it’ll be necessary. I am looking for a birthday present for my sister.
– It will be easier for me to help you if you describe her likes and dislikes.
– Well, She likes to be the best. She is good at dancing. She is fond of reading far more than going in for sport.
– Why not buy any beautiful dress?
– I’m afraid I can’t try it on. My size is different from hers and moreover, our tastes differ.
– You’ve said she likes to be the best. What do you mean?
– She is 30 but looks younger. She has a crazy idea to look as young as possible.
– Women of her kind like expensive cosmetics.
– Why didn’t I guess it first! Thank you for advice!
– Always welcome!

DIALOGUE № 3

– Hello, can I speak to Helen?
– This is Helen on the phone. Who is speaking?
– Barbara.
– Barbara? I was told you are far away from London.
– I am farther than you can suppose. I’m calling from Madrid.
– Really? What are you doing there?
– I’m taking my courses in psychology. I find it far more interesting than studying computer sciences.
– How do you like Madrid? Is it different from London?
– Of the 2 cities Madrid is the less dangerous and overcrowded. Life is far calmer here.
– It sounds wonderful! I heard life is cheaper in Spain.
– Oh, yes. I spend twice as less here and can afford much more. You can buy very good things at more than reasonable price.
– What about your private life? Any new friends?
– I wish I had! The more I study, the less free time I have.
– You haven’t changed. As busy as a bee! Leave me your telephone number, I’ll call you back.
– It’s 555-333 the easiest number to remember.
– Thank you for calling! Buy.
– Buy , let’s keep in touch!
