THE BRITISH CHARACTER

For centuries the British have been known as snobbish, hypocritical and unsociable people. That’s not quite true, though the character of an Englishman has some specific features. The British are considered to be rather conservative. They are proud of their traditions and keep them in everything. A reserved Englishman doesn’t like to show his emotions but he is always polite. They say that every Englishman is a country man at heart. That’s why they prefer to have their own house than to live in a flat. “My house is my castle” says a widely known English proverb. The British are supposed to be the world’s greatest tea-drinkers. They say: “Seven cups of tea wake you up in the morning, nine cups will put you to sleep at night”.The English are reputed to have a good sense of humor. The Scots are said to be serious inventive and somewhat mystical. The Irish are known for their charm as well as for the beauty of the Irish girls. The Welsh are an emotional people but sometimes reticent. “Every country has its customs”, says an English proverb.
