Ход урока

Организационный момент.

Teacher 1: You have got acquainted with different ingredients of a balanced diet at your Biology lessons. You must know how food is important for our body to function in the right way. At our previous lesson you learnt how to speak about different elements of healthy nutrition in English. Today we are going to revise this material and try to extend our knowledge of the conditions under which the human body can stay healthy. We'll speak about eating habits in general , then take some particular cases of junk food and harmful elements of different products that we buy at the shop, and finally, speak about healthy diet, because it is vital for everybody to know.

I. Актуализация знаний.

1) Teacher 1: For your home work you had to prepare a questionnaire and interview the pupils of our school about their eating habits .

Students show their questionnaires and report about the results: The most popular with pupils products are chocolates, sweets, fizzy drinks, fruit, juice, chips, yogurt, chicken, pizza, hamburgers, sausage.

The least popular food is vegetables (except potatoes), cereals, porridge, soup, fish.

Teacher 1: Eating is the natural process for people to stimulate their living. That's why we should take care about what we eat to provide ourselves enough energy and other necessary things.

Let's discuss the most important components of food. What can't we live without?

Student 1: Carbohydrates. They are the main source of energy. We can get them by eating cereals, bread , sugar, milk, cheese.

Student 2: Proteins. They are nutritional compounds that are essential to life. Meat, fish, beans and cheese are the main sources of proteins.

Student 3: Vitamins and minerals. They are substances that are essential for the normal functioning of the body and its health.

Teacher 1: So you see how it is important to understand what nutritional value our food has and from what sources we can get the most necessary components. Proteins, sugars, fats, vitamins and minerals - a balanced diet will include most of these. There are some effects of healthy eating that you will notice very quickly. What are they?

Students' possible answers: a) a healthy diet can help control your body weight, so that you are not underweight or overweight; b) it can give you energy to enjoy all kinds of physical activity; c) it can help our body and brain grow and develop; d) what you eat affects your mood.

Teacher 1: There are also some benefits that you might not notice straight away, but are worth thinking about. Scientific evidence shows that a healthy diet can help you avoid diet-related diseases. These diseases usually develop when people are over the age of 40. Can you name such disease?

Students: heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, strokes (brain damage due to blood supply problems), diabetes, some cancers. But the most popular problem is obesity.

Teacher: Think of your parents and grandparents - do they have any of these diseases? Wouldn't it be good if you could avoid having the same problems they have? Healthy eating now can reduce the risks of developing these diseases later on!

2) Teacher: And now I want to check how you have managed to memorize the new words . 1

Complete the sentences below with the words from the box.(См. Приложение)

II. Введение новых знаний

Teacher: We spoke about a balanced diet and healthy eating. A lot of people know about the harm that French fries and hamburgers can do them, however, they continue to eat "junk food".

Have you ever enjoyed such food? Maybe you are against all these hot dogs and cheeseburgers?

Let's discuss advantages and disadvantages of such food.

Student 1:

a) The attractive side of such food is that it is supposed to be made for busy people. You don't have to wait for your food or to cook it .

b) This kind of food is rather cheap.

c) It is also very nourishing. The simple fast food meal contains the quantity of calories you will need during all day.

Student 2: But we must remember that this is unhealthy food and we can't eat it every day. All products of fast food contain a lot of fats, carbohydrates, sugars and the content of vitamins or minerals is next to nothing. Also this food is full of calories, which can cause different diseases, and of course obesity.

Teacher: This food do not have enough fiber. Not having enough fiber makes you likely to suffer from constipation. Also there is too much salt. Salt plays a very important and complicated role in the body. But diets that are high in salt can put you at risk of high blood pressure, which in turn can affect your brain, your eyes, your heart: Too much sugar causes problems with teeth. This food is rich in fats, and if you don't have enough exercises, you put on weight.

Because fat and salt and sugar make foods taste good, fast food tends to have high levels of all these, to make people buy more.

But not only fast food can be dangerous for your health. Food products that you buy in the shop can also endanger your life. Most of them contain additives - chemicals added to food to give flavor, colour or used as preservatives.

The teacher asks two students to come up to the blackboard and gives each of them some flashcards with active words - the task is to divide them into two categories "healthy food" and "unhealthy food" and stick them up on the board with magnets.

(The words on the flashcards: vitamins, carbohydrates, fast food, fizzy drinks, calorie, minerals, French fries, sugar, smoked fish, salt, spices, bread, cake, carrots, lemon, butter, fats, vegetable oil, proteins, additives, preservatives, hamburger, hot dog, sweets, milk, straw berries, cream ).

Sometimes it is difficult to chose where to place a word, because different conditions when we use these products can influence their quality.

III. Введение новых знаний.

Teacher of biology:

Teacher: You have learnt а lot about some chemicals that have no nutritional value but are used in food production. Here are some definitions for toxic chemicals and dangerous elements in our food:

  • Additives - chemicals added to food to give flavor, colour or as a preservative.
  • Chemical preservatives - chemicals added to food to keep it in good condition.
  • Pesticides - used to kill insects that harm crops..
  • Antibiotics - special medical overload in factory farmed animals.
  • Genetically modified food (GM foods)- genetically engineered food.

The students are divided into groups and given the task to examine the food labels and say in English what ingredients are healthy and which are toxic.

Домашнее задание:

1) Write a report about the examined foods and give the recommendations of their usage.

2) Write an article for the Encyclopedia of Healthy Nutrition.
