Урок проводился после изучения темы «Модальные глаголы» на 4 курсе факультета иностранных языков Московского областного педагогического колледжа (г.Серпухов) на завершающем этапе.
Урок проводился в виде урока-презентации игры «Брейн ринг».
Цели:
Практические: проконтролировать речевые умения по теме «Модальные глаголы», активизировать коммуникативные навыки
Образовательные: совершенствовать умения употреблять модальные глаголы, совершенствовать умения работать во времени, вырабатывать темп учебной работы,
Развивающие: развивать аналитико-синтезирующее мышление, логику, память, развивать самостоятельность, совершенствовать навыки восприятия иноязычной речи на слух, совершенствовать навыки связной речи, развивать интеллект и познавательные способности, способствовать развитию творческой деятельности, развивать умение сравнивать, обобщать, абстрагироваться
Воспитательные: учить студентов проявлять интерес к стране изучаемого языка, обеспечить нравственное воспитание учащихся, повышать мотивацию к изучению иностранного языка, осуществлять эстетическое воспитание студентов
Оборудование: диск с презентацией, компьютер, карточки с текстом диалога, карточки с текстом письма, карточки с заданием (для аудирования), карточки с модальными глаголами для оформления кабинета, картинки с ситуациями (для оформления кабинета), домашнее задание в виде учебных пособий.

Good morning, dear students, dear guests, dear teachers. I am very glad to see you all here at our lesson devoted to modal verbs. We’ve just finished to learn this grammar material, we’ve written the test and are ready to prove that we are real experts on modal verbs.
It will be an unusual lesson, a competition lesson. That means that it’s necessary to introduce the jury and the teams.
We have got two teams, so introduce yourselves, please.
But let’s begin with the theory. The task will be about the functions of modal verbs. So, define the function and give the example.
I. Define the functions of the modal verbs (Slide 3)
1) What verbs express possibility?
The key: CAN a) He can win the race.(90%)
b) They could be at school.(50%)
c) He could have been killed in the car crash.
MAY d) They may be studying in this room.(50%)
e) He might want some more food.(40%)
f) He may have spoken to Ann yesterday.

2) What verbs express permission?

b) Could I use your phone?(More polite, asking for permission)
MAY c) You may use the phone.(formal)
d) Might I speak to Mr.Jones, please?(more formal)
e) I’m afraid you can’t/mustn’t see the patient.(informal)
f) Children may not be left unaccompanied.(formal)
3) What verbs express advice?
The key:
a) You should drink more water.(general advice)
b) You ought to respect the elderly.(most people believe this0
C) You had better finish it.(advice on a specific situation, it’s a good idea)
d) Shall I buy this car? (asking for advice)
4)What verbs express request?
The key:
a) Can I borrow your book?(informal)
b) Could I borrow your book? (polite)
c) May I have a cup of coffee, please? (formal)
d) Might I use your phone? (very formal)
e) Will you phone Jane tonight? (very friendly)
f) Would you mind sending this fax? (polite)
II. Identify the use of the verbs in bold, then say a synonymous expression. (Slide 4)

Now you are to read the dialogues given, fill in the necessary modal verbs and then act them out.

V. Make comments and speculations about each picture using modals. (Slide 7)
Now comment the pictures. Give as many variants as you can.
Picture 1 – He should have been more careful. He must be in terrible pain. He’d better see a doctor.
P 2 – He must see a dentist. He can’t eat anything.
P 3 –– She should have been more careful. She’ll have to cook something else now.
P 4 – He shouldn’t be sleeping in the office. He must be very tired. He must have been working since the morning.
P 5 – The cat must have been very hungry. She shouldn’t have left the bowl on the table.
P 6 – She should have stayed at home. She must take some medicine.
P 7 – He should have got to the station earlier. He will have to wait for the next train.
P 8 – She must be very upset. He shouldn’t have left her.
VI. A poem. (Slide 8)
I think the next task is very interesting. You are to listen and read a poem. It is about the person’s feelings, even the things’ feelings after the other person has left. Be very attentive because later you will have to decide whether the statements are true or not.
