T:  Good morning boys and girls. I am glad to see you health and sound. What is the date today? What is the day today? The theme of our lesson is  Political system of English speaking countries such as The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and The USA.

T: This the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It consists of four counties. What are they? Name four counties of the UK. P1: They are Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England.
T: The flag of the UK is called the Union Jack. There is a lion in the coat of arms. The lion is the symbol of strength.

T: The Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the Queen.

T: The political system of Great Britain consists of three branches: the legislative branch, the executive branch, the judiciary branch.

The legislative power

T: The legislative power in the country is exercised by the  Houses of Parliament. The British Parliament consists of two chambers. What are they?
P: They are  The House of Commons , The House of Lords.
T: You are right. The House of Lords  consists of 880 hereditary peers  26 spiritual peers and 270  life peers. The members of the House of Commons are elected by the people and they are the real governing body of the UK. The House of Commons has 650 popular elected members.

T:  The executive branch consists of the Prime minister and the cabinet. There are 20 ministers in the cabinet. The Prime Minister is the leader of the Majority party in the House of Commons he is the chairman of the Cabinet. Do you know what is the official residence of the British Prime Minister?
P: The official residence of the British Prime Minister is Downing Street,10.
T: You are right. There are three main parties in Great Britain  the Labour Party, The Liberal and the Conservative (the Tories). The second largest party becomes the official opposition with its own leader and the shadow Cabinet. (Слайд 9)

T: The leader of  the Conservative (the Tories) is David Camiron .    The leader of the Liberal party is Gordon Brawn.

System of Government

Britain is a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarch – Queen Elizabeth monarchy? So it is a parliamentary monarchy. Today  the Queen is not only the head of state but also an important symbol of national unity. In law the queen is head of the executive, an   integral part of the legislature, head of the judiciary, the Commander-in-chief of all the armed forces of the crown and the supreme Governor of the established Church of England? But in fact she has no actual power. Queen’s power is limited by the Parliament. The royal family continue to take part in many traditional ceremonies.

T: The USA is a presidential republic. The Head of it is the President. The head of the state has the real power.  How many states are there in the USA.
P: The USA consists of 50 states.
T: The flag of the USA is popularly called “The stars and Stripes and old Glory”. It consists of 13 horizontal stripes equal to the number of the original states and 50 stars equal to number of states today.  The political system consists of three branches: executive, legislative, judicial.

T: The legislative branch of the US Government, or the Congress, represents all of the American states. It consists of two parts. What are they?
P: They are the House of Representatives and the Senate.
T: The vice-president is the head of the Congress. Each state has two senators, who are elected every 6 years. The job of the Congress is to make laws. The President can veto a bill. The House of Representatives can also impeach the                                           President. The executive branch puts the country’s laws into effect. The President of the USA is a member of the executive branch. The President must be at least 35 years old, and be a natural         citizen of the USA. The judicial branch of the government is the system of courts in the USA. Its job is  to enforce laws.               The Supreme Court is the Highest Court in the country. It consist of 9 justices: one Chief Justice and 8 associate justices. (слайд №14)
T: When was the constitution of the USA written?
P: The USA constitution was written in 1787.
T: You are right. It is   the oldest constitution in the world.

The USA Constitution, written in 1787,established the country’s political system and is the basis for its laws. In 200 years the USA has changed a lot.
Yet the Constitution works as well as when it was written. One reason is that the constitution can be changed. (For example, the 15th Amendment gave black Americans the right to vote). Another reason is that the basic principles of the Constitution can be applied and interpreted differently at different times.

The President is both the head of the State and of government. He is the head of the executive branch.  The Queen is the official  head of the state.
The Prime minister is the leader of the government and the leader of the party with the majority seats in the House of Commons. He is the head of the executive branch
The president and the members of the US Congress are elected. The Congress is composed of two houses – the senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate has 100 elected members. The House of Representatives has 435 members
The members of the Cabinet are appointed. The Cabinet includes the ministers in charge of major government departments or ministries.
Parliament is made up of 2 chambers – The House of Commons and the House of Lords. The members of the House of Commons are elected. The House of Common consists of 650 elected MPs. The House of Lords consists of over 1100 permanent non-elected members.
