Good afternoon! Welcome to our holiday which is dedicated to World Earth’s Day that people all over the world celebrate today, on the 22nd of April.

What is going on here?!
Every living thing is perishing!

Now listen to a little history about this holiday…
In spring 1979 the oil was spilled into the Pacific ocean at the seashore of the USA not far from Santa-Barbara (it is not far from Los-Angeles).
Hundreds of inhabitants of this city went out to the seashore to gather the oil in order to save every living thing of destruction.
And then they decided that it was necessary to dedicate one holiday to the Earth at least. In that way since 1979 Americans began to celebrate Earth’s Day on the 22nd of April every year.
In 1994 Earth’s Day became the world holiday.

What have they done to the World?

What have they done to the seas, my friend?
What have they done to the seas?
What have they done to the rivers, my friend?
What have they done to the trees?
What have they done to our land, my friend?
This land which is ours from our birth.
What have they done to our forests, my friend?
What have they done to the skies, my friend?
Skies that are blue and so clear.
What have they done to the skies, my friend?
What have they done to the air?

It is known that the age of our planet is 4,6 milliard years. Scientists say that life on the Earth began about 4 milliard years ago.
Now try to imagine that those 4 milliard years would be shortened to one year. So one day of that year would be corresponded to 11 million years.
And now try to answer the question: ’When did life begin on our planet?’
It is interesting that the first inhabitants of the Earth were bacteriums which arose on the 1st of January. The greater part of that year there were no living beings on Earth except them.
The first typical to future plants and animals cells arose on the 1st of September.
After that evolution began to proceed more quickly. The first invertebrate animals arose in September and October. The first fishes arose in November. Then the first amphibian arose.
Dinosaurs arose in December. They existed on Earth until the middle of December. At the end of December the first birds and mammals arose.
At last the first man arose on the 31st of December at 4 o’clock in the evening or 3 million years ago!
The scientific and technological revolution took place in 18th century and lasts only 2 seconds. But people had already had time to reduce the nature of our planet to ecological disaster for the last 2 seconds!
As the result of economic activities of man both the air, the water and the soil are polluted. The pollution of the environment is the most serious problem today and if we want to survive and live any longer, we must solve it until its too late.

Teacher: Dear friends! Just now you saw the film about the environmental situation in our planet. As this problem is global I want you to read the text about the earth on which we are living now. The earth is our home we must take care of it Each of us must do everything possible to keep the land air and water clean.

Keep Our Environment clean»

Teacher:You have just read the text of document connected with ecological situation of our planet. I want you to discuss this situation. Please, be active in our discussion. Who wants to be the first?

Student 1: I want to be the first. For a long time too little attention was paid to the environment. Today the situation is quite different. People all over the world are worried about what is happening to the environment, so I want to speak about ACID RAINS. Acid rain is extremely harmful to plants, rivers and lakes , and the creatures that live in them. In some places it is killing forest. It pollutes the water that animals and people need to drink. Its very important for us to stop making acid rain. One good way to do that is to drive our cars less. Another good way is to save energy. The less energy we use, the less could those power plants will have to burn.

Student 2: I fully agree with you, but I want to tell some words about AIR POLLUTION. Until about 150 yeas ago, the air was pure and clean-perfect for the people and animals of the earth to breath. Then people started building factories. Those factories and many of things they make ,like cars, put a lot of harmful gases into the air. Then people started driving cars, which added more pollution to the air. Today the air is so polluted in some places that its not always safe to breathe! Many cities around the world have air filled with a pollution called «smog».This is so strong in some places that the air ,which should be a beautiful blue, actually looks brown.

Student 3: By the way, I must say about WATER POLLUTION. The planet Earth is mostly water. Oceans cover the biggest part of it-and there are lakes, rivers, streams, and even water underground .All life on Earth –from the little bugs to the biggest whale-depends on this water. Its precious. But we are not doing a very good job of keeping water clean. In many places, the water has become polluted. The rivers and lakes are polluted by garbage or by poisonous chemicals which are dumped right into them. Underground water can be polluted by gasoline or about other harmful liquids that seep into the ground.

Students 4, 5, 6. We want to speak about such problems as:

1.Too much garbage.
2. The cutting out our forests.
3. The ozone holes.

Journalist’s interview with the members of Greenpeace.

Now I’m going to speak with the Leader of Greenpeace, the international organization whose members work actively to protect the environment from the damage caused by the industrial process of military activities.

J: Hi! Would you tell me about the history of the organization?

M: Hello! Greenpeace has been campaigning against environmental degradation since 1971. We have 25 departments in different countries and we promote important actions all over the world.

J: Thank you. Please, tell me about the role of teenagers in Greenpeace. Do you have teen’s departments in the organization?

M: Of course. We have teen’s division. We want to involve teenagers all over the world in the activity of Greenpeace.

J: Tell me about the future actions of Greenpeace, some “green” events.

M: Ok. I’d like to tell you about the nearest event. We’ll have a camp on different seasides and take care of sea birds. Many petroleum companies get a litter into the sea. Oil can be on wings of the birds, they can’t fly. We will wash the birds from the oil. This is a volunteer action.

J: It’s a great action. I think many people all over the world want to help sea birds. You and Greenpeace have a really great activity.

M: Thank you very much. We take care about our environment, because our planet is our house and our children’s house. We can make our environment more protective. Members of Greenpeace hope, that more people will be interested in the protection of our planet.

J: I’ve heard about Genetically Engineered Food and what’s your attitude to this problem?

M: Greenpeace organization also takes actions by sending MPs protest letters against GMO. Genetically modified crops including potatoes, maize and oilseed rape are already being grown in 140 test sites. No one needs GM food, except the companies investing in it. The only reason for its existence is to increase business profits.

Our slogan is: Save our planet! Join it!

WOODZY OWL: Hello, friends. I am a WOODZY OWL. I can help you to save our, earth. Attention, please!

First of all:

  1. When you hike leave the place clean.
  2. Use your head. Smart people recycle aluminum, paper and grass.
  3. Be a friend to fish. Don’t throw rubbish into their homes.
  4. Plant the trees to create homes for birds squirrels, and other small animals.
  5. Grow the different flowers for to enjoy.
  6. We think about the future of the planet.
  7. So I suggest to spend the Holyday of Earth day in our school in our village. Do you know this holiday?

The 22 of April is the day of Earth, which is celebrated around the world. Join us and clean the Earth. Make the world a better place. Taking care of the Earth is everybody’s business.

«How beautiful is our Planet»
How beautiful is our Planet,
How beautiful is blue sky,
How beautiful are spring flowers
And winter snow, and autumn rain,
And summer shining sun
O, Mother Earth, I’m in love with you,
I love your rivers, valleys, hills and seas,
Your songs and dances, birds on trees
The fields, the trees, the grass, the sky,
The silver moon that’s sailing by
How beautiful are flowers sweet and
stars of night !
And song of birds and whispering of wind
Such lovely things to hear and see
Belong to you, belong to me
How beautiful is all, which we can see.

THE BALTIC, A SEA OF WASTE

  • The Baltic is a special case. It is a small sea and it becomes dirty very easily. There are hundreds of factories on the rivers which run into the Baltic. Millions of people live along them. Seven industrial countries surround the Baltic. All this affects the state of the sea water, flora and fauna.
  • Pollution is a serious problem. It affects everyone every day. Where does pollution come from? Is it only factories, big ships and cars that pollute? No. It is you and me as well. If you drop litter, you pollute. That’s how it begins.
  • Most big cities pour their waste into seas and rivers. For a long time people did not realize the danger. The first alarm came from Japan. Sixty people died because they had eaten polluted fish.
  • Fortunately all the countries in the Baltic area have realized the problem. They came to the agreement. The aim of it is to prevent oil pollution of the sea, to organize fishing and the preservation of sea life.

Tasks for the text:

  1. Read the text and answer the question: where does pollution come from.
  2. Read the text carefully and find the sentences which explain that people have realized the problem.

ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF OUR REGION

  • The Far North has grown several times. It was due to the rapid development of northern territories. Thousands of kilometers of roads and railways have been built. Thousands of wells have been drilled. A large oil and gas complex was constructed. It is harmful for the environment.
  • Thousands of trees are cut out. Millions of tons of oil have got into the ground and water. Flares put wastes into the air. The land, grass and trees around the flare resemble a foot of a volcano. The damage to the flora and fauna is great.
  • What must be done? People must minimize the damage to the Nature. They must improve technical equipment, the technology of oil and gas.
  • People must be responsible for their deeds. We must do our best to save the original nature of our region.

Tasks for the text:

  1. Reading the text, find out what must be done to prevent the damage.
  2. Think of another title of the text.

The Fragile Planet

The word environment means simply what is around us. Some people live in a town environment; for others, their environment is the countryside. But the air we breathe, the soil on which we stand and walk, drink are all part of the environment.

Nowadays people understand how important it is to solve the environmental problems that endanger people’s lives. The most serious environmental problems are:

  • pollution in its many forms (water pollution, air pollution, nuclear pollution);
  • noise from cars, busses, planes, etc.;
  • destruction of natural resources (metals, different kinds of fuel);
  • the growth of population.

Water Pollution

There is no ocean or sea which is not used as a dump. The Pacific Ocean, especially, has suffered from nuclear pollution because the French Government tests nuclear weapons there. Many seas are used for dumping industrial and nuclear waste. Britain alone dumps 250,000 tons of industrial waste straight into the North Sea. This poisons and kills fish and sea animals. “Nuclear-poisoned” fish can be eaten by people.

Many rivers and lakes a poisoned too. Fish and reptiles can’t live in them. There is not enough oxygen in the water. In such places all the birds leave their habitats and many plants die. If people drink this water they can die too. It happens so because factories and plants produce a lot of waste and pour it into rivers. So they poison the water. Factories used clean water. After the water is used it becomes poison which goes back into rivers, lakes and seas.

Air Pollution

You certainly know that most of the pollution in big cities comes from cars and buses.

More and more often people are told not to be in direct sunlight, because ultraviolet radiation from the sun can cause skin cancer. Normally the ozone layer in the atmosphere protects us from such radiation can get to the earth. Many scientists think that these holes are the result of air pollution.

Nuclear power stations can go wrong and cause nuclear pollution. This happened in Windscale in Britain, in Three Mile Island in the USA and Chernobyl in the former Soviet Union. Nuclear pollution can’t be seen but its effects can be terrible.

To make air clean again we need good filters at nuclear power stations, at factories and plants and also in cars and buses.

Both clean air and clean water are necessary for out health. Man is beginning to understand that his environment is not just his own town or country, but the whole earth. That’s why people all over the world think and speak so much about ecology.

Answer my questions.

  1. What does the world environment mean?
  2. Does our environment have any problems?
  3. What makes the sea waters dangerous nowadays?
  4. Why is it dangerous to dump industrial waste in the sea?
  5. Where does air pollution in the cities mostly come from?
  6. Why is it not safe to be in direct sunlight in certain place?
  7. Why are nuclear power stations dangerous?
  8. What other ecological problems can you say?
