Main aim - developing students' communicative competence.
Objectives:
- Brainstorm and practise vocabulary on the topic
- Practise affirmative and interrogative sentences in Present Simple
- Practise the present forms of the verb to be
- Develop listening, reading and speaking skills
- Develop students' creativity
- Teach about the importance of love and friendship
I. Getting On Board The Ship. Today we are going to travel to a magic country and speak about important things in life: love and friendship. To get on board the ship to get to Love country we need to say who or what people like. (Elicit answers from students - parents, Granny, friends, pen pals, pets, etc.) Students sit down as they answer.
II. Crossing the River. The river to Love country is wide and rough. To cross it, we have to revise some Valentine words.
Match the pictures of Valentine symbols with the words written on board. (Cupid, lace, a heart, love birds, hugs and kisses, chocolates, a ring, gifts, ribbon, a dove, friends, a Valentine card) To make the task more complicated, students may be asked to fill in the missing letters.
III. Beautiful Garden. Now we are in a beautiful garden. There are so many lovely flowers here. We often give flowers to our friends and sweethearts. Let's see if you remember the names of these flowers.
It's a : / They are : (pictures of flowers: singular - a rose, a daisy, a carnation, a lily, an orchid, a tulip, a pansy; plural - violets, forget-me-nots, roses, etc.)
Now let's learn about each other's flower preferences. My favourite flowers are yellow roses. What are your partner's favourites? Ask your partner and tell us. (Students work in pairs and then report about their partner's preferences)
IV. Poetry Castle. Now we are in front of a magnificent Poetry Castle. But the door to it is locked. To unlock it, we need to recite Valentine poems.
Each bright flower is here to say
My wish for you: "Happy Valentine's Day"!
A friend like you
Is a dream come true!!!
When I see you, I can fly.
If you leave me, I can die.
Red and yellow, white and blue...
The brightest flowers are just for you!!!
You are best of all, my dear friend.
My love for you has no end!
Sending a basket of Valentine's wishes
Filled with lots of love and kisses!
Round is the ring that has no end,
So is my love for you, my friend!
Now we are inside and a mysterious person meets us there. He wants us to hear a song. Listen to it and fill in the blanks. (Focus on singular and plural forms of the verb to be)
I ______ your friend,
You ________ my friend,
I see the love in your eyes.
I' _____ here for you,
I sure _______ glad
You _______ my friend
Let's sing along
Now our friend wants to teach us to make poems for those we love. Look at the poem and say why some words are underlined. (they can be substituted) Brainstorm words that can be substituted.
Roses are red.
Violets are blue.
Honey is sweet
And so are you!
red: carnations, tulips white: lilies orchids pink :
blue: forget-me-nots (if other words are used e.g. the sky, attention should be paid to the verb changes)
sweet: sugar, syrup, juice
Create your own poems.
V. Friendship Village. Now our friend is taking us to Friendship Village. Those who live there like to have fun. They want to ask you questions about your friends. The questions are written on paper but the words are mixed up. You have to put them in the right order, read them and answer them. (It's better to use a different colour for each sentence. The teacher names the colour not the student.) Students work in pairs making up questions, then they read their questions out loud and others give an answer.
What presents does your friend like? (green)
How often do you see your best friend? (orange)
What do you like doing together? (blue)
When is your friend's birthday? (red)
What's your friend's favourite colour/food? (purple)
What does your friend want to be when he/she grows up? (yellow)
Now our new friends want to play with us. We have to match friends from cartoons.
(Lilo & Stitch, Shrek & Fiona, Cinderella & the Prince, Tom & Jerry, Tweety & Sylvester, Winnie - the - Pooh & Piglet - each name on a separate piece of paper/cardboard)
Now get a description of the character, read it and find a partner. (Each student gets a card, students mingle and find the pair)
You are a funny cat. You always run after a little mouse. He lives in your house. | You are a cute little mouse. You always run away from a funny cat that lives in your house and wants to catch you! |
You are a big black cat. You want to catch a little canary bird. | You are a little canary bird. You fly away from a big black cat because he wants to catch you! |
I live with my father, stepmother and two step-sisters. I like dancing and I love the prince. | I'm the prince. I have got a girl's shoe and want to find her because I love her and want to marry her. |
I live with my parents. I am very beautiful but at night I become fat and ugly and my skin turns green. | I am short and fat and my skin is green. I live in the forest and people are afraid of me but I love a beautiful princess. |
Now let's sing a song "Will You Be My Valentine?" Students can sing it to a known tune or chant it.
Will you be my V - A - L - E - N - T - I - N - E?
If you will I'm sure I will be happy as can be.
Sugar, spice and all things nice - that's what you are to me!
Will you be my V - A - L - E - N - T - I - N - E?
(substitute a letter in V - A - L - E - N - T - I - N - E for a movement (keeping silent), adding until all letters are movements)
V - Touch your chest
A - Touch your knee
L - Stamp your right foot
E - Stamp your left foot
N - Touch your head
T - Snap fingers on the right hand
I - Snap fingers on the left hand
N - Right hand on the left shoulder
E - Left hand on the right shoulder
VI. Now we have to go back. To show you remember how important friends are, make special Valentine cards for people you love. (This can be students' homework.)
