Dear Dina!

I was glad to receive your letter. Thank you. I know much about Russian young people spending holidays. I’d like to write you about our British youngsters .Some teenagers can’t get along well with their student mates. Parents insist only upon their desires. They don’t support them. That’s why teenagers often fight with each other, use alcohol, make crimes.

The reason are media, TV programmers, unemployment and poverty in many families.

As to the Convention on the rights of the youngsters these rights don’t work. And teenagers can’t solve their problems.

On the other hand there are organizations involving young people into outing, music festivals, amateur theaters. Britain has got about 3600 clubs.

The members of the Greenpeace protest against weapon tests, sea and soil pollution/

I hope, Ann, have got an idea of our young people/ I would like you to write me about Russian youngsters, their subcultures, their favorite music, sportsmen.

With love

Yours Ann

Pupil (По ключевым словам и плану, написанным на доске, учащиеся рассказывают о жизни сверстников в Англии)

Violence among teens is dangerous. It has become worse ever. Young people have addiction to drugs, smoking. They miss lessons. As result the society has fightings, killing. Many teens are arrested at the age of 10. Suppose the reasons of teen’s cruelty are social changes, lack of money bad accommodation. Besides grownups are indifferent to their children’s negative actions. Media makes the situation even much more worse. And the young people can’t join in the society.

Teacher: Can you give examples of teen’s violence?

Pupil: We’ve read story about cruelty of young people. It was in a pub. Mr. Brown took to the club his son. He wanted him to play in his orchestra. But a group of bad educated youngsters didn’t want to listen to the orchestra. They were aggressive. They used juke-box and didn’t let the orchestra play Mr. Brown got angry. He threw plug out of the socket. Fighting began. There were pushing, sounds of broken glasses, smashing, severe struggle.

Pupil: All these things are connected with school and family worries. Parents often grumble. But the youngsters want to live their own life.

Pupil: They have to decide questions themselves. They live in a group, shove around or commit suicide.

Pupil: Teens choose their own life style. There are many kinds of subcultures: skins, hippies, bikers, hackers etc. Bikers appeared in 1986. Usually they work as guards.

Pupil: Hippies have good ideas. They are peaceloving, wear worn out jeans and chains.

Skinheads reject laws. They are aggressive.

Pupil: As to me teens’ worries seem now increase. They understand uselessness of the Convention on the right of children. For example, they have to pay transport fare, they have to earn pocket money.

Pupil: But there are positive things in the life of teens. They go to school. They speak there on different topics with classmates. They have dates. It’s not bad to my mind.

Pupil: In addition teens visit clubs, share school actives and have friendship. They listen to music and go in for sports or travel a lot.

Teacher: By the way do you, comrades, remember. Ann writing us about her new friend Bill Who is 14. And his hobbies are drawing photographing, heading, traveling and … sewing. And he is going to visit the USA. It’s just impossible to imagine all this!

Pupil: And Bill has time for all his hobbies. He manages to cope with all these things! Just so surprising!

Teacher: Your homework, students, is to make up 12 sentences about the life of teens in Russia in comparison with British ones.

Teacher: Now, comrades, you are to speak about teens in Britain as much as possible. If someone has any difficulties, others will continue.

Use the cards on your desks.

(Дается время 5 мин. Учащиеся рассказывают, добавляют известные данные. Высказывается каждый член группы. Ответившие ученики получают карточки с заданиями)

Teacher: Now I give you marks. Open, please, your diaries.
