Librarian: Good afternoon, dear boys and girls, teachers and guests. Today we are going to hold the reading conference in our school. We invited many guests to it, besides let me introduce Mrs. Brown, who came from England to take part in our conference. We have come this evening to talk about our favourite books. Most children like to read and think that books are their friends, I think so, too. I like to read very much. And what do you think about books, boys and girls. Do you think that books play an important role in our life?

P1: I agree with you, because reading makes people clever and wise. It helps to get over difficulties in grammar, etc.

L: Do you like to read books?

P2: As for me I like to read books, but I am fond of reading detective stories about “Sherlock Holms” by Arthur Conan Doyle.

L: What is it you liked about the book?

P2: The plot is interesting. I liked the way the author describes the adventures of Sherlock Holms and his friend Doctor Watson.

L: And you, P3?

P3: From my point of view, the reading of detective stories is not so interesting as books of adventure. My favourite writer is Mark Twain. He wrote such a famous novel as “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn”.

L: P3, What is the book about?

P3: The book describes the life of the American children, their friendship. There are many funny scenes in the book. This book is very easy to read besides you learn a lot about the American way of life.

L: Thank you, P3. Children, by the way, what English and American writers do you know?

P4: The most famous English writer and a poet is W. Shakespeare (biography of the writer, his books).

P5: Daniel Defoe. (biography of the writer, his books).

P6: Jonathan Swift “Gulliver’s Travels” (biography of the writer).

L: P6, What do you think of the book?

P6: I liked it. It is rather interesting.

P7: Mary Dodge “The Silver Skates” (biography of the writer).

L: Who are the main characters of the book?

P7: The main characters of the book are… The book describes the life and the work of poor people in Holland.

P8: Lewis Carroll “Alice in Wonderland” (biography of the writer)

P9: Rudyard Kipling “How the Whale Got His Throat” (biography of the writer).

L: All right children. Thank you. I see that all of you read many interesting books by English and American writers. By the way, P11, what are you reading now?

P10: A book of poems. They were written by Robert Burns (biography of the writer).

L: Are you reading them in English?

P10: No, in Russian. They were translated by Marshak.

L: Dear guests, today our children will recite many poems written by famous English and American poets.

P1: I’ll recite a poem by R. L. Stevenson.

“The Wind”

A saw you toss the kites on high
And blow the birds about the sky:
And all around A heard you pass
Lake ladies’ skirts across the grass –
O wind, a-flowing all day long,
O wind, that sings so loud a song!
A saw the different things you hid,
I belt you push, I heard you call,
But always you yourself at all –
O wind, a-flowing all day long,
O wind, that sings so loud a song!

P2: I’ll recite the poem by Robert Burns.

“A Red, Red Rose”

O my luve is like a red rose
That’s newly spring in June:
O my luve is like a melody
That’s sweetly play’d in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I:
And I’ll luve these still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry.

P3:

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’ the sun
And I’ll luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ live shall run.
And fare thee weel, my only luve,
And fare thee weel a while!
And I will come again, my luve,
Tho’ I were ten thousand mile!

L: Thank you very much! It was great! Now, children, let’s talk about your home libraries. If I’m not mistaken you have a good home library!

P3: You are quite right. We have a good library at home. There are more than 500 books in it. All books are in two big book-shelves in our living-room.

L: What kind of books are there in you library?

P3: There are books by Tolstoy, Chekhov, Pushkin and other Russian writers. There are also many books by foreign authors: M. Twain, J. London, T. Dreiser, J. Galsworthy and others.

L: All right! It’s very convenient to have your own library. But many children visit town libraries, school libraries. What about you, P5?

P5: As for me, I like to read books very much. I prefer science fiction to books of adventure. Last year I took out a library card. I filled in a form and became the reader of our town library. Now I visit the library once a week.

L: Thank you! Oh, what do you want to say, P6?

P6: It goes without saying books are our friends. Books helped me to get over difficulties in grammar. I was a very ignorant person. I made many mistakes in my compositions, tests and I didn’t like to read books. But my parents advised me to read books. First, I began reading the fairy-tales. But now, I read fiction. I think that books helped me, because I don’t make any mistakes in my compositions, tests. My speech is vivid and bright. I’m happy.

L: So, dear boys and girls, you see that. “Books are our friends” and we must take care of them. To my regret, there are some pupils, who don’t like the books. Let me introduce P11. He wants to say something to you.

P11: I don’t like books and I don’t care of them! Look at my books! I like to draw in my textbooks. I often draw at the lessons. It is very interesting. All my books are full of funny little figures, cars, pictures. My hobby is football, not reading!

P3: P11, you are wrong! Books are our friends.

P11: My friend is my ball.

P4: You must be careful with the books.

P12: (assistant in the sport section) P11, we shall give you new and interesting books about sport and football. Do you want to read them?

P11: Yes, I do.

P12: But you must take care of the books.

L: Then you must tidy up your text-books. Children, there are some library rules for you. Look through them attentively, remember them and don’t forget about them. Now, it’s high time to present you my assistants. Let me introduce P13.

P13: My name is… I am fond of English and American literature. I help the readers to choose books in this section. The children read books by M. Twain, J. London, T. Dreiser and others with great pleasure. Come here and choose any book you like.

P14: I’m the assistant in the sport section. Here you can find and read the books and magazines about sport.

P15: I’m the assistant in the popular science fiction section. Here you can find the material for your research work.

L: Thank you! Now, dear children, I want to present Mrs. Brown. She came here from Stratford-upon-Avon. Let us great her!

Mrs. Brown: Good afternoon, my young Russian friends. My name is Olivia Brown. I have come to Russia from Stratford-upon-Avon. It is the birthplace of our great dramatist William Shakespeare. He is also one of the world’s greatest poets. Shakespeare’s plays are wonderfully interesting. His historic works tell the stories of the early English kings. Others tell the tragic stories of the ancient world. He is famous all over the world. As for me, I’m a librarian, too. I work at the children’s library. Our children are very good and take care of their books. I’m very glad that Russian children know and love our favourite and popular authors: William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll and many others. When I come back I shall tell English school-children about you. I’ll give your address to them. Thank you.

L: Have you got any questions?

P7: Will you please show us your home-town on the map?

Mrs. Brown: Here it is. Many tourists from all over the world come to the birthplace of Shakespeare.

P8: What Russian authors do English people read?

Mrs. Brown: They read Tolstoy, Chekhov, Pushkin and others.

P9: What are your favourite Russian writers?

Mrs. Brown: My favourite Russian writer is Chekhov.

P10: And English?

Mrs. Brown: I have many. They are Oscar Wilde, Somerset Maugham, John Galsworthy.

Librarian: Now children and our guests, our conference has come to an end. You’ve known much about the books, their role in our life, you’ve got acquainted with Mrs. Brown from England. Thank you everybody for coming and taking part in our conference.
