Meet our newspaper
1. Today we are going to speak about newspapers. Every day or may be from time to time people read newspapers. But do they know much about the first newspaper? Do you know anything about it?
2. Listen to some information from the history of the first newspapers. Try to make some notes. Then each group will get 2-3 dates and you are to say what information is connected with them.
- The earliest newspaper appeared in 59 DC in Rome. It was a daily newspaper. It was very little – only one sheet. It informed people about political events, scandals, conflict and executions.
- The first daily newspaper in England was the Daily Courant. It was published in London in 1702.
- In France the first daily newspaper “Journal de Paris” appeared in 1777.
- In 1784 “The Pennsylvania Packet Became the first daily newspaper of the United States.
- In Germany the first newspaper “Leipziger Zeitung” appeared in 1661.
- In January 1703 – the first newspaper “Vedomosti” was published in Russia. Peter the Great considered that event to be the most important. The newspaper informed people about victories of Russian Army, about shipbuilding, news of education, about life in different cities of Russia and Europe.
3. Nowadays you can find different kinds of newspapers in the world. There is a newspaper in our school too. It is called “Bolshaya peremena». I hope you read this newspaper, there are some of its issues. Will you look through them and answer my question: What articles do you like most of all?
Use the words:
interviews, adventure stories, about fashion, school news, advertisements, horoscopes, jokes, uizzes, congratulations on holidays, photos, sayings of famous people, romantic stories, extremely popular, entertaining, useful, informative, humorous, creative, boring.
4. Our elder pupils have taken part in the Internet quiz recently. And our task was to create a newspaper in English. Meet our newspaper.
ANNA (Editor in chief): We tried to do our best to make a useful, informative, interesting and humorous newspaper. It is called “SMILE” – some modern ideas about likes and enjoys. There are 4 sections in it. (Приложение)
The first one is called ComRuNet. It is for children who like to play computer games.
The second section “Ticklings and Scratches” is about our pets, especially about cats and dogs.
The next section “Meals on Wheels” is for boys and girls to read together. Somebody likes to eat and cook and somebody likes to drive a car.
The last section is for everybody who wants to know everything about music.
5. Now work in groups and try to match the headings to each section.

8. Now imagine, we are all members of the editorial board. Each group will choose one job and tell us how you will make your newspaper unusual and amusing.

Design producers: What will you use to make your newspaper colorful?
9. And now the 8-th form pupils will help the little ones to learn some new words and fill them in the gaps. There are some texts for you.
