Language focus: Numbers, fruit, vegetables, Give me please, Here you are, take away, how many/how much left

Procedure

1. Greeting!

2. Setting the aim: today we are going to solve the problems and going shopping will make it easier for us…

3. But first of all let’s remember the way we count from 1-20 and back

4. Big cards with written numbers and figures are on the blackboard, in different order, children match written number with the figure, at the same time two pupils from a group do the matching of small written numbers and figures. Checking the task.

5. Oral counting, the teacher shows flashcards with figures and sets the problems e.g. 5 add 6 is…., children answer, 10 take away 7 is…, about 10 problems will be enough to make sure  the children understand the meaning “take away” and “add”

6. Before we go shopping let’s have a look what we have in our shop… Children name and count the things which are in the shop (vegetables, fruit, sweets, biscuits, sausages etc.)

7. What do we say if you want something from the shop? - Give me, please…and of course the amount, e.g. Give me, please 15 sweets…What does the shopkeeper answer? - Here you are…And of course we never forget about “thank you” and “please”.

8. Teacher asks the pupils to make their shopping lists in which there are things they need from the shop and amount

9. For the first dialogue the teacher chooses two pupils from the group, one is a shopkeeper, the other is a customer.  Customer with the shopping list comes to the shop and buys 3 things, here is the example of the dialogue:

- Hello!

- Hello!

- Give me, please 12 bananas…

- Here you are!

-Thank you!

- You are welcome!

10. On the blackboard there is a scheme:

The shop has Customer bought Left
Apples
Bananas
Sweets
Biscuits etc.

11. While the children role-play, the teacher writes on the blackboard the amount of things the shop has and customer bought, then asks children to do the calculations and say how many left…

12. When this is done, two other children role-play once again, but one more child is at the blackboard and writes the task, e.g. The shop has 20 apples, customer buys 10, left ten, so 20 take away 10 is 10...

13. You can continue problem solving as many times as the lesson allows… but mind the children do not get bored with the same task.

14. Thank the children for the work and being good pupils.

15. Conclusion, what the children have learnt during the lesson.

16. Giving home task - to make your own problem and write it down.

17. Saying goodbye!
