Задачи:
- обобщить лингвострановедческий материал по указанной теме;
- углубить и расширить знания по теме;
- совершенствовать умения и навыки практического владения английским языком по данной теме, по всем видам речевой деятельности;
- повысить интерес к изучению английского языка.
Оборудование: два компьютера, 20 карточек с вопросами, аудиокассета с песней “The streets of London”, 10 карточек с названиями качеств характера, 2 схемы для команд и 1 схема (заполненная), звезды для команд.
Ход урока
I. Teacher: Two thousand years ago, in the year fifty five before our era Julius Caesar struggling forward on his galley to the unknown land saw white cliffs. “The land behind them must be white too. We shall call it Albion”, said he. Alba in Latin means white, and the name Albion remains to this day.
Did you guess what our lesson is devoted to? (Ответ учеников.)
Today you show your knowledge of the UK. You’ll have several tasks to do. Some of them were prepared by you at home, but most of them weren’t prepared. I hope our competition will be fun. Let’s introduce our teams to each other.
Team 1: The name of our team is red rose.
Team 2: The name of our team is Shamrock.
Teacher: I have a lot of red stars for the team “Red rose” and green stars for the team “Shamrock”. For each right answer you’ll get a star of your colour.
Let’s start our competition.
II. The first task is the following. On the blackboard you can see the emblems of your teams. On the other side there are questions about the UK. Each team has 2 minutes for answering the questions in its emblems. Each member of the team goes to the blackboard, takes the card with his emblem, answers the question and takes his place. So, all members of the team take part in this task.
Questions for the first team:
- Where is the UK situated?
- What separates Great Britain from the Continent?
- What is the population of the UK?
- What river is London situated on?
- Who is the symbol of the typical Englishman?
- What country is not a part of the UK?
- How do we call a person who likes to do everything carefully, avoiding any risk?
- How do we call a person who doesn’t laugh or make jokes very often?
- How do we call a person who works a lot and try to do his best?
- How do we call a person who likes the company of others?
Questions for the second team:
- Which island of the UK is the largest one?
- How many countries does the UK consist of?
- What city is the capital of the country?
- What is the most famous drink in Great Britain?
- What city is the capital of Scotland?
- How do we call a person who gives money to help other people?
- What is the weather like in Britain?
- How do we call a person who desires more food, money, things?
- What is the national emblem of Scotland?
- How do we call a person who doesn’t like changes?
III. The second task is «Find the correct information ». You know a lot of facts about London.
Let’s check how well you know the information about this wonderful city. Take place at the the computers and do the next task: “Fill in the gaps with the correct information”

IV. Let’s have a rest and sing the song “The streets of London”.
V. I’m sure you agree that London is full of sights. Its common knowledge that the main sights are Big Ben, Westminster, Trafalgar Square, the Tower and many others. During our lessons we talked a lot about these sights. Let’s see which team is ready to go to London. Go on working at the computers. The next task is «Choose the correct answers». VI. For centuries the British have been known as snobbish, aloof, hypocritical, and unsociable.
The British are said to be polite and well-mannered people. They are practical, realistic and careful about almost everything.
During our lessons we speak a lot about contrasts of British character. Let’s remember what
qualities of the British character do you know? (Ответы учеников.)
Here are the cards with the qualities of the British character. One person from the team takes the cards and demonstrate the character trait without words, you should only act. All the rest of the team should guess the word. For each guessed trait the team will get a star. Each team has one minute for this task.
Words: polite, well-mannered, prudent, kind-hearted, greedy, hard-working, generous, sociable, serious, reserved.
VI. And now you have the last task. You are to complete the chart. Each team will be given one and the same chart connected with the geographical position of The UK. You have three minutes to solve this chart. The team which complete all chart will get 5 stars. (Команда получает незаполненную схему.)
VII. Our competition is over. Let’s sum up the results. Count your stars.
