Урок-исследование по теме "The Amish People"

Цели урока:

• Образовательные:
  • развивать навыки устной речи по теме, расширяя кругозор школьников, давая им информацию об образе жизни людей страны изучаемого языка;
  • обеспечить закрепление  лексического материала по теме ‘Lifestyles’;
  • продолжить  формирование умения вести беседу, работать в группах и  совершенствовать навыки связной речи.
• Развивающие:
  • научить   выделять главное,  формулировать, и тактично отстаивать свои  суждения;
  • развивать коммуникативные навыки, логическое мышление, память, воображение.
• Воспитательные:
  • содействовать эстетическому воспитанию учащихся;
  • формировать  толерантное   отношение  к культуре, традициям и обычаям народа страны изучаемого языка, дать понятие об общечеловеческих ценностях.

Оснащение урока:

• мультимедийная система,
• презентация творческих групп, созданная учащимися при подготовке к уроку (Приложение 1),
• таблица «экспертов»,
• магнитная запись текстов и песни,
• магнитофон.

ХОД УРОКА

I. Вступительное слово учителя

– Warm-up. (Приветствие учеников, настрой на  продуктивную работу, приветствие коллег).

T: Good morning my friends. I’m so glad to see you, especially today when a lot of guests have come to our lesson. How are you?  Are you ready to work? Will you greet our guests?
My dear colleagues, I’m happy to greet you here at our grammar school. And so are our students. I believe that you won’t waste time but get satisfied with our work. Don’t be too serious; don’t think about tasks and marks. Simply relax and enjoy the lesson. We promise to do our best.

II. Определение целей и задач урока

Учащиеся делятся  на творческие группы, формулируется  установки на работу.

T: Well, we’re beginning. During a number of lessons we’ve been learning about a unique group of people – the Amish, who live in America. Today our Amish friends have come to us from a far away country – the USA, from the state of Pennsylvania. They want  to share  their lifestyle. Here is the group of Russian students - hosts of our school. They’re going to learn more  about the Amish and tell them about Russian lifestyle.  And the third group is our experts, who know much about both sides and want to compare different lifestyles and analyse the work of the two groups.

III. Определение понятия “The Amish People’ по разным словарям

T:  But first of all our experts will determine ‘the Amish’ according to different dictionaries.
E1: Well, we’ve already read and learnt a lot of things about our Amish friends from the Internet, different magazines and newspapers. We’ve found out from the dictionaries who the Amish are.
E2:  According to the “Macmillan English Dictionary”  ‘The Amish are a religious group in the USA that lives in a traditional way, mainly by farming and doesn’t want to use modern technology’.
E3: According to the “Dictionary of the USA” ‘The Amish are a group of Protestants that lives in reserved communities, who can do without modern technologic inventions such as telephones, tractors or cars.

IV. Аудирование текста, написание заголовков к абзацам текста

T: Now we’re going to listen to the text about the Amish and each group will have a task. You - the Amish people and the Russian students, will listen to the text and write down the topics to each paragraph. And later our experts will analyse and tell us whose topics are more exact.

Обе группы дают названия отрывкам.

1). The world without progress. The Amish world. The People who live to the Bible.   A strange world of the Amish. Who are the Amish?  Life based on the Bible.
2). The Amish clothes. Plain clothes of the Amish.  The Amish people’s appearance. The Amish Fashion.
3). Gentle people. The Amish families. Helpful people. Hardworking people.
4). The Amish Pastime. Strict and Simple lifestyle of the Amish. The Religious Amish. The People who sing religious hymns.

V. Нацеливание экспертной группы на анализ заголовков

T: Now it’s time for our expert group to tell about the topics that they think are the best.  Don’t forget to use the following expressions - in our opinion, as we think, we consider etc.

T: And while the experts are coming to an  agreement, let’s listen to Pavel who was in Pennsylvania last year.

T: Now it’s time to listen to our experts about the topics of the text.

E: We’ve made the survey and we consider that both the Amish and the group of Russian students have done a good job. Their topics are rather good. But the most exact ones are: ….

VIII. Представление презентаций обеими группами

T: You know that the Amish people don’t like to pose for pictures or video cameras, because they believe that it’s against the biblical teaching. But today they are ready to introduce their presentations   so that we’ll be able to imagine their lifestyles better. And you, our dear experts, should be very attentive, because you have to put down bad and good things about the different lifestyles and explain your ideas.

The Amish

E1: Can you tell us about your lifestyle and your origin? You, our students, will you be ready to ask some questions after the presentation?

A1: Well, the horse drawn buggy is the best known symbol of the Amish. Our ancestors came to the United States from Germany and Switzerland and the Netherlands in the seventeenth and eighteenth hundreds. They were expelled from their home countries because of their religion and peaceful views. Most settled in Pennsylvania. Other Amish people live in 22 American states (Ohio, Indiana, Iowa) and Ontario in Canada. Now about sixteen to eighteen thousand Amish live there. Dutch is a name for people of the Netherlands, but many of the Amish came from Germany.

A2: We, the Amish, live as our ancestors did many years ago. We live in farmhouses heated with wood stoves.  Our houses without electricity and telephone lines look like the Englishers around us. Our houses are comfortable with a large number of rooms for typically large families. We get water from wells and we use windmills to pump water for our houses. Many of our conveniences were used in America in 19th century. Wood and coal fueled stoves provide us heat. And our cooking stoves are powered with propane, kerosene or wood. Gas lamps provide us light.

A3: We don’t drive cars. Instead we travel by horse drawn buggies. We don’t have electricity or telephones because we don’t want connections to the outside world. We don’t accept people from big cities because they can teach our kids to drive cars, smoke, drink alcohol and use drugs. You know we live to the Bible and go to church. And there are no bad habits in the Bible.

A4: We are easy to recognize. The women wear long dark-coloured dresses. They cover their heads with bonnets. The men wear black jackets and trousers and dark hats. And men usually grow long beards.

A5: Most Amish families have seven or eight children. They leave home only when they marry. The boys usually marry at the age of twenty and the girls a few years younger. The ceremony takes place in the church. Young couples get married in November or December, but they keep the marriage a secret until July or August. Then the girl tells her family about her marriage. When the Amish man gets married he doesn’t give a diamond or a gold ring to his girl, he gives china or a clock.

A6: Education is the part of our tradition. Most of the Amish children go to school. School is usually taught in a one room school house and the teacher is usually a young Christian woman.

A7: Everyone in the Amish family works in the fields, because we are good farmers. We keep farm animals and each family has got about twenty hectares of land. We plant and harvest crops without modern technology.
We are good carpenters and cabinet makers, blacksmiths and harness makers. So our life doesn’t depend on the outside world. We can build a house, make furniture, raise crops and animals. So we have a simple lifestyle and we are happy together. That’s all about us, if you have any questions you’re welcome.

• What meals do you cook?
• Aren’t you offended that you can’t use modern technologies?
• Isn’t it boring to do the same things every day?
• Have you got your own website in the Internet?
• When do you usually get up and when does your working day start? Etc.

T: Now we want the Amish group to learn a little bit about Russian students’ lifestyle. They’ve also prepared their presentation, their visiting card.

The Russian Students.

S1: Our life extremely differs from yours. We live in the civilized world with all modern conveniences and comfort such as electricity, telephones, computers, cars, planes, trains and tractors.

S2: We go to public schools and learn a lot of subjects there. Our schools are big, there are about 900 students and nearly sixty teachers. We have a teacher on each subject, who teaches us in big classrooms. We watch TV and discuss some TV programmes. We work on computers and roam  the Internet. We communicate with people around the world.

S3: We have PT lessons at school and we do sports, we play different games: football, basketball, tennis, we ride a bike, roller skate and swim in the river in summer, we go skiing and skating in winter.

S4: After school in our free time we go to different clubs and enjoy our hobbies. Some boys and girls go in for dancing and singing, some attend language clubs, some go to the theatres and exhibitions.

S5: We wear modern clothes: jeans, T-shirts, shorts, trainers. But at school we wear a uniform: boys wear dark jackets and trousers and white shirts, girls wear dark skirts or trousers and white blouses. 

S6: In summer we have holidays and travel a lot. We visit different places, make friends with new people, learn new things. We live in multinational country, where people of many nationalities and religions live side by side with each other.

S7: We live in the families, but usually they are not very big. We don’t work on farms and in the fields. We don’t cut, lift and hammer the wood. We’ve got factories and plants where a lot of goods are produced, that we use in our every day life. Our parents work in plants, offices, schools, shops, hospitals. They don’t make us do hard work, but help us  learn new things, get knowledge in different subjects. They also give us some pocket money for our own expenses.

S8: So we think our life is interesting, enjoyable and exciting. We are proud of living in Russia.

T: Well, if you have got any questions we are ready to answer.

IX. Анализ презентаций «экспертами»

T: Well, I think that now our experts are going to discuss both presentations and later they’ll express their opinions.

X. Ассоциации, которые вызывают слова TheAmish,The civilized world

T: While they are discussing  I want to ask you some questions. What associations come to your mind if you hear the word ‘The Amish’, ‘The civilized world’? (Учащиеся по очереди записывают на доске слова, связанные с цивилизованным обществом и миром эмишей).

XI. Рефлексия

E: Well you’ve learnt a lot of interesting things about each other. We listened to you attentively and made the survey of about your lifestyles. We put the information about you into three lists like this.

What we think are:

 E:   Of course we can’t imagine our life without progress, but we think that the Amish life has got more positive sides. And modern life with its technologies has a lot of negative things. But at the end of our survey we came to conclusion that the world is different and we have to understand each other, to live in harmony with nature and ourselves.

XII. Подведение итогов урока. Оценки

T: Our dear Amish quests, dear students and our experts. The more we live the more we learn. Today we have leant a lot of things about each other, about our lifestyles, customs and traditions. Wherever we live, whatever we do, it doesn’t mean what lifestyles we follow, we should be patient, tolerant, generous, friendly and helpful. We should live side by side in mutual understanding with each other.

T: So at the end of our lesson I want you to sing a very nice song for our guests.

From the red-wood forest to the Gulf Stream water;

XIII. Домашнее задание

– Make a poster about your life. Illustrate your text with pictures or photos. Write some captions for the illustrations.
