Teacher: We’ve got an unusual lesson today-a tour around London. We are going to speak about London and its most famous sights. Our lesson is divided into several parts. We’ll sing a song, revise places of interest in London, make up some dialogues, speak about the history of London. Do you like our plan? So let’s start with the song “London’s burning”.

London’s burning, London’s burning.
Fetch the engines. Fetch the engines.
Fire, fire. Fire, fire.
Pour on water, pour on water.

Teacher: You can see some key words on the blackboard. Read them, use them and say a few words on each of these topics.

P1: London’s history began with the Romans. They built a town on the River Thames. The name of the town was Londinium. By the year 400, there were fifty thousand people in Londinium. Until 1749, there was only one bridge over the river: London’s bridge.

P2: At the beginning of the 11th century England was already a big country and London was a very important city. In 1066 William the Conqueror went to England from Normandy in France. He became King of England but he was afraid of the English and built the White Tower. In 1666 there was the Great Fire of London. After it people built a new city. By 1830 there were more than one and a half million people in London.

P3: London is the capital of England. The heart of London is the City. It is the oldest part of London. You can visit some interesting places in the City or near it. One of them is the Tower of London. Not far from the Tower of London is St. Paul’s Cathedral. It is one of the greatest churches. It was built by Sir Christopher Wren.

Teacher: Well, my friends. We see you know the history of London very well. And now imagine you are at a Tourist Information Office.

Teacher: Who wants to be the office worker?

P1: Hello! - P2, P3: Hello!

P1: Can I help you?

P2: Have you got a map of London, please?

P1: Yes, here you are.

P2: Thank you.

P3: Could you give us some information about London’s most famous sights?

P1: What have you already seen?

P3: We haven’t seen anything yet.

P1: Have a look at these leaflets and choose what you like.

P2: Oh, the leaflets are very nice!

P3: And the tours are very interesting too: Trafalgar Square, Madam Tussaud’s. I’d like to begin with a London sightseeing tour on a double-decker bus.

P1: OK. Have a good day!

P2, P3: Thank you. Good bye!

P1: Good bye!

Teacher: Well done. And now we have “London Sightseeing Tour on a red double-decker bus”.

Teacher: Ladies and gentlmen! I welcome you to London. Let me introduce myself. I’m your group leader. My name is... I’m glad to meet you on this double-decker bus.

P1: London is the capital of the United Kingdom and the centre of the Commonwealth. It is one of the largest cities of the world. It stands on the river Thames. London is more than two thousand years old. London’s most famous sights are: Tower Bridge, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square. You’ll see these places from our red double-decker.

P2: We start from Trafalgar Square. It is the heart of tourists’ London. This is where public gatherings and political demonstrations take place. The tall column in the centre of the square commemorates Admiral Nelson’s victory in the Battle of Trafalgar, where the British navy defeated the navy of Napoleon in 1805.

P3: Now we are coming to Piccadilly Circus. It is a famous London landmark and meeting place. There is a bronze fountain in its centre with famous statue of Eros, the Greek god of love. Look right. We are passing Hyde Park.

P4: Now we are at Buckingham Palace. It is the London home of the Queen. It is a wonderful building with a monument in front of it which is the Queen Victoria Memorial.

P5: On the left you can see a long grey building. Look at its towers. They are the Houses of Parliament. The large clock in one of the towers is Big Ben. Big Ben is one of London’s most famous landmarks. In fact, it is not the name of the clock on the Tower of Westminster, but it is the nickname of the bell inside.

P6: On the other side of Parliament Square you can see Westminster Abbey. It is one of the most famous and beautiful churches in London. Many English kings and queens are buried there. Westminster Abbey is famous for the Poet’s Corner too.

P7: Now we are crossing Tower Bridge. From here you can see the Tower of London. It was a fortress, a royal palace and later a prison. It is a museum now.

P8: We are making our way to the second famous church, St. Paul’s Cathedral. It is the greatest work of the architect Sir Christopher Wren. We’ll stop at Fleet Street. You can go shopping. Our tour has finished. I hope you have enjoyed this tour. Thank you and good bye!
