III. Presentation of project work
Biysk Today and in Future
Hello! We would like to introduce ourselves to you. We are Moseichuk Maria, Koynov Alexander, and Krylova Svetlana. We are radio DJs. We will tell you interesting facts about the town we live in. Biysk is the oldest town of the Altay. On the 29th of February 1708, Peter I ordered the war guide Ovtsin to make a fortress on the rivers Biya and Katun.
In 1804 a coat of arms of Biysk was confirmed. It looks like a shield. A white horse is shown upstairs and downstairs there is a mountain with a mine. There are many architectural monuments in Biysk. The architecture of the old part of Biysk shows the life at the beginning of the 19th century. The renovated centre of Biysk has become a very precious historical complex, and it is used for attracting tourists to the town.
The most beautiful, important, and well-known house of Biysk is the old “People`s house”. Now it is the Drama theatre. It was built in 1913 on the money of the town mecenate Kopilov. Through the centuries it has been a library, a bank, a dining room, a House of Workers. In 1941 Barnaul operetta theatre came to that house, and even now people come there to see performances. Another well known architectural monument is the Bianka Museum. It was founded in 1920 . The collections of the Altay University started the museum fund. It is very interesting sometimes to visit this museum. And there is one more museum in the centre. In this place people can see photos of the most beautiful parts of Biysk.
A film about interesting sights of the town, made by this group.
There are many famous people in our town. Our correspondent has taken an interview with one of them. Please, listen to them.
A correspondent.
There are many ways of development of our native town, and I think that coming out of this situation depends on people’s support. We call everybody to help us and to take an active part in renovating Biysk.
Listen to the interview with Oleg Sorokin. He is popular in Biysk. Everybody sees his programme “Mimokhodom” about teenagers from different schools of our town.
--Good morning, Oleg Ivanovich. How are you?
- Good morning, Maria. I`m fine, thanks.
-- Why do you make programmes about children? You love them, don’t you?
- Of course. But I make programmes about children, and about their school life. I worked as a teacher of history a few years ago.
--But I have heard you are working on the programme “Okraina”. Is it true?
-You are right. I want something new.
--What is this programme about?
- My new programme is about our town, people who lived and worked here. I want to show beauty of our small but very interesting town.
-- Is the programme about the centre of the town?
- Not only about it. I tell people about very distant places of Biysk, about parks, streets, which are unknown for many people.
-- And what is the aim of your programme?
- As I have already said I inform people about the history of Biysk, new things. I want people to know the town better.
-- I see you are fond of your town?
- Certainly. Biysk is my Motherland.
-- Some people say that Biysk is not a modern and beautiful town. Do you agree with them?
- Biysk is a small provincial town. To my mind native residents like the town and value it.
Many schools hold different shows where pupils and teachers learn history of our town.
- I like such shows very much. They help us to learn more things about the town.
-- And what about your plans and wishes?
- The town has beautiful places, churches, museums. But we have no big parks. So I decided to create a project “Green parks”
-- Do you think your wish is real?
- I consider my idea is very actual. I know a young architect who agrees to help me.
And I plan one more project. It is about a city of science.
-- I don’t understand you.
- Let ‘s imagine a beautiful, silver skyscraper. It is full of children in blue costumes at the age of 10 to 20 years old. They are busy. They are working. They are making chemical and physical experiments, solving difficult equations. These young students get high awards. There are many new modern technics, furniture, books in classes. And it is not Europe, and even Moscow or Petersburg. It is our small but very interesting town. It’s unique. Of course, this project needs much money from the authorities. But I think that it is a very clever investment of money. Children are our future. And people should make everything for them.
-- I see. This is a good idea. Oleg Ivanovich, thank you for your interesting interview.
I wish good luck to your programme.
-- Thanks. Good-bye.
- Good-bye.
A correspondent.
In conclusion I want to say the following. Last year Biysk was called a scientific town. But I think this proud name is not justified. As for me I don’t see changes between Biysk a year ago and Biysk nowadays. There are no beautiful parks with flowers and happy mothers with their babies, walking along the paths, modern buildings. Schools haven’t got enough technics, libraries. Where are we moving?
Streets are muddy, torches don’t light, there are many homeless animals and rubbish. “Where are we moving?” I asked. “What do local authorities pay attention to?” They consider the town to become better itself, don’t they? It is my opinion. Our deputies say “Biysk doesn’t get money from the regional budget. But they find money for Election Company... Without commentaries…
Of course, I’m not a politician, but to my mind, they have ways out of this situation. I suggest the development of tourism in our town. Biysk is a gate of the Altai. We should use it. Our nature is “GOLD” of our region.

Sports in Our Town
What plays an important part in our life? People reply the question differently. But my answer is sports. It is sports that provide the necessary physical state and at the same time enjoyment and recreation. Different kinds of sport in Russia can be explained by the variety and size of the country, its different climate and people’s love to competitions.
Biysk is a sporting town. Popular sports are hockey, football, track and field, tennis, basketball, volleyball, boxing, wrestling, biathlon, cross – country skiing, swimming.
There are public sport facilities in Biysk where our sportsmen have trainings and where matches and competitions are regularly held. Our town is famous for its athletes who win medals in different championships in the country and abroad. They are Vorobyov, Dementyev, Cheglakov, Galeev, Ovcharenko and others. I want to tell you about one of the sportsmen, Tatyana Tsoi. Tatyana Tsoi a swimmer, a master of the international class came back to Biysk fromTurin.
She received a gold medal in the 13th world championship in 6000 meter event. Besides, Tanya won two silver medals. Her victory was uneasy. Rivals were strong Really, European rivals become more proficient. It is a pity that experienced trainers from Russia go to Europe, because there are more perspectives.
Although there were no many chances to win the race, Tanya did the best and finished the first. Trainings in the waterfall “Dolphin” in Biysk were not in vain. Trips to the lakes Aya, Round, Issek-kul helped Tanya in competitions in Italy.
Sports develop patience and responsibility in everybody and victory hardens characters. Tanya graduated from the Technical Institute, recieved a red Diploma, and now she has a postgraduate course. For three years she has won three gold medals.
I consider that in future more sportsmen will appear in our town, will have possibility to discover their abilities, because I hope there will be many programmes, which will promote development of sports.
But if we want to increase a number of successful sportsmen, we need a good sport complex for their trainings. We should think about our future. But first we should think about our present. What do we have? We have a sport complex, three stadiums, and two swimming-pools such as “Dolphin” and “Mother and Baby”. That’s why we suggest a building of a big sport complex “Ice centre”. It will consist of a skating rink, with cloak rooms, training rooms, cafйs, saunas, a swimming-pool. I think such project requires an area of about 5000 square metres but we will have a skating – rink of 2000 square metres and stands for 500 spectators. In front of the “Ice centre” they will build a car parking and a park for rest. All the territory will be planted with trees. Our centre will have an installation for freezing ice, which will let to preserve ice even in summer time and keep up the temperature of five degrees below zero. In the spectator hall we will have comfortable temperature 16-18 degrees above zero.
The hight of the building will be about 13 metres. The shell of the building will be made of metal, iron-and-concrete, the walls-of gas-and-concrete. The building will be decorated with big windows.
As for me, I’m very glad to present you this project, because from my childhood I like to skate and want to do it not only in winter. And I think It’s real to fulfil it in spite of the cost of this project. The complex will attract many people from all over the Altay territory, because international competitions will be held there. And of course, we should build hotels with warm comfortable rooms and qualified staff, a restaurant and cafes. Dear authorities, please, hear us. We need money to build such a sport complex and our children will thank you!

Tourist Routes
All roads to Teletskoye lake run from Biysk, which is named a gate to the Mountain Altai. It is a terminal station of the railway.
The town is located in a wide picturesque valley on the banks of the river Biya as a border between the southern Western-Siberian lowland and the Altay plain, it extends about thirty kilometres and comes to an end in the place, where the powerful mountain river Katun and the calm river Biya merge.
Biysk was founded in 1709 according to the personal decree of Peter the Great as a fortress for protection of southern boundaries of the Russian empire. Then around the fortress a settlement appeared, later-a town.
The favourable geographical situation of the city caused its fast development. From there trade ways went to the Mountain Altai, Mongolia and China, and Biysk became a large shopping centre in the south of Western Siberia.
(A trip around the town)
In Biysk it is necessary to make a stop and get acquainted with its sights.
Examining the town, you should visit its old part, where buildings are monuments of the architecture of the XIX century.
The museum by V. V. Bianky has interesting exhibits, telling us about the past and the present of the town, the territory, a wonderful perfect library with hand-written materials. The exhibits of the museum consistently narrate the development of the Altai from the ancient times. Among numerous exhibits a large lock, which has been removed from the western gate of Reichstag, attracts our attention. The resident V.F.Kraev brought this lock as memory about the battles.
In the staff of the museum the tireless researcher, historian, honourable citizen of the town of Biysk Boris Kadikov has been working. His information in press, on the radio and TV about the history of the Altai is popular. B.Kadikov is able to answer practically any question, concerning the history of the territory.
One of the largest enterprises is a chemical enterprise, which makes various kinds of production. There are furniture factories, plants, producing boilers, electric furnaces and other things. “Altayvitamin" makes famous sea-buckthorn oil and other valuable remedies. The production of this outstanding and important enterprise is widely known not only in Russia, but abroad.Ecologically clean medical production has deserved general gratitude.
For 25 years the expert, brilliant organizer, doctor of sciences, academician Yuri Koshelev has been at the head of this enterprise. Under his management the enterprise has turned into a highly-organized one with modern equipments.
(A guide tour to Belokurikha)
70 kilometres from Biysk the city - resort Belokurikha is located in a picturesque place. It is one of the largest resorts of Russia. Radon hospitals and favorable climate allow people to improve health and to have a good rest. Highly professional doctors work there.
(A guide tour to Teletskoye lake)
From ancient times Teletskoye lake is considered to be an unusual picturesque place. This unique reservoir has kept practically without changes up to nowadays. A taiga, clean air, mountain rivers with amazingly transparent water supplement a general picture of uniqueness of this place.
It is necessary to say that Teletskoye lake is more beautiful than the Baikal. However it is possible to estimate this charm only after visiting it.The lake is located 250 kilometres from the railway. It rescues Teletskoye lake from the invasion of modern civilization. In 1952 on the left bank of the lake they built a settlement, which began to destroy huge areas of the magnificent taiga. Fortunately traces of this destruction is unvisible. Two highways connect Biysk with Teletskoye lake. One of them runs along a high right bank of the river Biya. The places are amazing, you see mixed woods, pine forests, large and small fields with agricultural plants.
Another way is the famous Chuyski road. Besides these two roads there are some other ways. They are tourist routes. Routes are difficult, it is necessary to have good physical fitness, experience of overcoming mountain rivers, passes, taiga.
One of the oldest camp " Gold lake " has settled down on a picturesque terrace two kilometres from the source of the river Biya. Now this camp is private.
The mountains here are covered with taiga. On the right coast of the lake there are mixed woods with birches, aspens, pines, wood glades and small areas, cultivated by a man.
The opposite coast of the lake is covered with cedars. The abrupt slopes of the mountains are near the water. The coast is severe, gloomy. There is a settlement on both coasts of the lake. On the right - Artibash, on the left - Iogach.
In the evenings when calm comes there, you see real beauty that impresses everyone. The bright complete moon lights mountains, giving them fantastic silence. The reflection of the moon in the lake as a gold path crosses it from one coast to the other, shows its beauty, and withdraws your thoughts. It is a fantastic world, where nothing can make you sad. You sit and admire this magnificent empire of beauty.
Everyone, who has visited the lake, will never forget it.
Come and see all these places yourselves.

V.M Shukshin
The purpose of our project is to introduce creativity of V. M.Sukshin to the biggest number of people and to arouse the interest to his native land, where he was born and studied.
Vasiliy Makarovich Shukshin is an outstanding Russian writer, director, and actor. His name took place among such famous people as Vladimir Vysotsky, Voznesensky, Yevtushenko, and Okudzhava. It is difficult to estimate Shukshin’s contribution to Russian culture . The mysterious Russian soul and curious mind found their expression in masterpieces of Shukshin`s creativity.
In 1982 an article in a Swedish newspaper “ Shukshin’s Phenomenon” appeared. The author of that article was Steffan Scot. He wrote: “Vasily Shukshin is the greatest figure of the Soviet literature in the 70s. His stories touched the hearts of Russian readers. He is loved by Russian emigrants abroad as well as at home. His phenomena are in the following: a peasant guy from the Altay showed himself as an actor, a writer, a director, a playwright brilliantly”.
But it’s difficult to realize and to learn fully the creative nature of Shukshin, not visiting the Altay and his native village Srostky. Everything impresses you: great fields, green forests, quick rivers, mountains covered with snow. These places help us to understand his puzzles and to touch things that gave the source to Shukshin`s creation.
That’s why a great number of people arrive to Srostky to see, to listen, to take part in Shukshin Reading. It’s held on the 25th of July on the writer’s birthday. Last summer people celebrated the 30th anniversary of Reading. A lot of famous people, who knew Shukshin personally, came to Srostky and recollected the great writer, his way of life, and creativity.
But only a small number of people knows that Reading, devoted to Shukshin, began in Biysk. First, 31 years ago, it took place in the central library, then in the city garden. After that the idea of Shukshin Reading was picked up in Srostky. That’s why since 1976 and nowadays it’s held in the House of Culture and named Maly Reading, but it’s also very interesting and educational.
The director of the central library – Larisa Domnikova, who knew Shukshin personally, told us about him: “He was not a tall man. In spite of his fame, he was very simple in communication and I liked him as an interlocutor?
After his death a museum was opened in Srostky. It is the house where the writer was born and spent his childhood. There are photos, things, furniture, and books. It helps us to understand Shukshin better. You may visit a 4-storeyed school where Vasily studied. In 2004 a monument to Shukshin was established on the top of the hill Picket. It`s seen from all parts of the village. Shukshin is sitting on the ground bare-foot, looking into the distance.
31 years have passed since his death, but words, which he wrote with capital letters “People,Truth, Life” – didn’t lose their original meaning.
If you are interested in our information, you should come and take part in Shukshin Reading; you are likely to have a good time.
