Of course, the Americans are very proud of their traditions.

- The people of the USA are a mixture of many different nationalities. In one city you can find people whose parents, grandparents came from China, Africa, southern Asia. Americans still celebrate the festivals of the Old World. Sometimes the old celebrations are more important in the USA than in the countries they came from. American children have more fun at Halloween than Scottish children do in Scotland. There are new American festivals and traditions as well as the old ones. Only Americans celebrate Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, and the 4th of July. Rodeos and high school homecomings only happen in the USA.
- American schools have many different ceremonies. One of these ceremonies is called “Homecoming”. At many high schools and universities there is a parade and a big football game once a year. This ceremony is held every fall in small towns. Homecoming is a week – long celebration for all students. At the ceremony the homecoming queen rides in the parade and opens the sport event – usually a football players walk together.
- Americans love sports of all kinds. Many people play sports in their free time, and many go to games or watch them on TV. American sports fans are friendly but very noisy. One of the most popular sports is football. About 37 million people watch football each weekend during the fall and winter. Baseball is also very popular. Basketball is played in the winter and spring. At big games in the USA there is a lot of entertainment before and during the game. There are parades, bands. Professional games are fun, but so are the thousands of smaller games. Each school has its own teams.
- Do you prefer jazz music or Bach? Each year in the USA there are festivals to celebrate almost anything you can think of. Festivals are the state fairs. These are usually at the end of summer. Farmers enter their animals in competitions and hope to win a ribbon. There are also prizes for the biggest and best crops and for homemade food, clothes, toys, etc. Each part of the USA has its own special festivals. When people from Europe, Asia and Latin America came to live in different parts of the USA, they brought their celebrations. One of the best known festivals in the world is “Mardi Gras”. It takes place early in the year in New Orleans, Louisiana. For 2 weeks there are big parades, parties and dances. Not all festivals are as famous as Mardi Gras.
