Cinematography

“The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”, “Inception”, “La La Land”: all award-winning, highly-acclaimed and financially (1)_________________ pieces of (2)__________. Still, (3)__________ films isn’t just an art; there is also a (4)____________ involved. The science of (5)___________________.
The dictionary defines cinematography as “the art of making (6)______________________”, but it is so much more than that. It is the craft of (7)____________________ and it takes years for one to perfect it. Essentially, cinematography includes everything that has to do with the camera – the (8)______________, the (9)______________, the (10)____________, etc. Whereas (11)______________ make all the creative decisions regarding the camera, cinematographers actually make them happen. So how exactly do they do that?
The cinematographer or (12)____________________________ is the person that leads the (13)____________ and light (14)___________ on a film (15)____________. They collaborate closely with the director to create the (16)__________ you see on screen. A cinematographer is in charge of:
*(17)___________ placement, as the positioning of the camera greatly affects how the audience reacts to the (18)__________;
*camera movement, which heightens the (19)____________ and suspense in a (20)_____________;
*(21)_____________________, which refers to the way elements of a scene are arranged in a camera frame;
*(22)__________ size – that is, how much of the scene is seen or how close we are to a subject’s face;
*(23)__________, which allows the cinematographer to highlight different aspects of the (24)__________;
*(25)_____________, which is always managed in collaboration with the lighting (26)__________________.

By creating the desired visual texture, a cinematographer can either make or break a film. It’s what separates great cinema from cliched (27)__________________, and it is ultimately about capturing the perfect images.

Pre-production. The development stage.

This part of the process encompasses the activities necessary to get a movie ready for production, that is, filming. These include discussing the concept and script, historical research, storyboarding, and casting.

In restaurants and offices, producers and movie executives cook up a deal and talk it through. At this stage, a screenwriter also produces a draft of the script. The screenwriter is usually known to the producers or executives, having worked with them in the past, or through experience on similar types of projects. Whatever the screenwriter’s stature, the script is very often rewritten again and again to please the producers and studios, in a process known as development, which can be so tortuous that it earns the name “development hell”. When the script is finished and believed to represent a potentially profitable venture, studio executives “green light” the picture and pre-production begins.

Actors may also be involved at the development stage. This is even more likely to be the case if the script is being written as a vehicle for a particular actor, or is attached to a well-known actor-director/producer team (such as James Cameron/Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1980s and 1990s). Another situation in which this may be the case is if the actor is the director himself (such as Clint Eastwood or Mel Gibson). Often, stars who are big at the box office are involved during development to secure the necessary funding for a big film. A top US star can command US$30 million per movie – and may also receive a percentage of the gross profit. Less well-known actors are usually signed up during this stage.
