Aim(s):

To review the question structure: Where do you...? and typical short responses: In the classroom, in the living room, in the kitchen, in my bedroom. To provide an opportunity for learners to give a personalised response.

Materials needed:

Flashcards: kitchen, bedroom, living room, dining room + activities

7.

Preparation:

Children should be familiar with the wors PLACES and ACTIVITIES.
Teacher explains that each wall in the classroom represents one of the places. Put up a picture of the place in each space to ensure this is clear.

Procedure:
Step 1.

Step 1: Model and drill pronunciationof the PLACES words, chorally and individually.

Step 2: Teacher models the activity by asking the question: "Where do you eat?", eliciting the response "in the kitchen" and moving towards the wall of the classroom that represents the kitchen. Ask volunteers to do the same. The remaining students now join in.

Step 3: Ask questions using activities from the Pre A1 Starters wordlist
Where do you listen to music / read books / do your homework ...?
Repeat the question and the responce together as a group "in the
kitchen / the living room / the dining room / my bedroom" to make sure they have understood and allow an opportunity for a productive response.
Step 4: Working in pairs, learners tell about themselves: I sleep in the bedrom...

9.

Variation(s):

Instead of rooms in the house you could use at school, at home, in the park, in the playground. Practice questions like "Where do you play with your friends / learn English .....?

10.

Reflections:

Young learners liked the tasks as they were arranged in an engaging active way. I noticed that some students can face some difficulties with speaking about themselves, so I suggested them to sit near the stronger students. This can help the weaker ones learn the words better in a more dinamic way.
