Presentation Stage
A teacher offers students to listen to the tape and say they have ever heard this music.
Students listen to the music and take notes. This piece of music is taken from the modern play “Romeo and Juliet” to pique the learners’ interest.
Pre-Reading Stage
To help learners to do the previous task the teacher gives a prompt (some pictures) for better understanding. <Приложение 1>
The teacher asks a set of questions about the books:
- What books are familiar to you?
- Who is the author of the book?
- What are the British authors?
- What are the American authors?
- What heroes from these books do you know?
- What book is a tragedy? (The key question motivates students to express and prove the topic of the lesson and accumulate important points).
While-Reading Stage
Students are offered to know more about William Shakespeare. A teacher divides students in 3-4 groups, each is given a jumbled text. They must read it attentively and make up the text in the right order. < Приложение 2>
Post-Reading Stage
A teacher organizes a text-based discussion to stimulate students for speaking. First of all they check the right variant of the text all together. <Приложение 3>
Then learners’ task is to discuss the facts from the text that surprised them and to explain why they have attracted their attention.
In activity "Describing" students must describe or draw with description a woman/a man of Shakespearean’s times. <Рисунок 1>, <Рисунок 2>, <Рисунок 3>, <Рисунок 4>.
Learners are given illustrations with a variety of topic words. Students match the pic by the number and chose it if they need (a teacher may help students to translate the words or ask them to use dictionaries). They think over, discuss, draw and describe a person who lived in the Shakespearean times.
Also groups can be asked to design a poster on the topic. They are to decide what they are speaking about, what aspects of Shakespeare's life they wish to describe, etc.
"Controversial ideas". Students watch a controversial video twice, then think over and speak for and against it giving arguments. By the end of the debate each student should make up his/her mind which idea to support. The teacher may help students to provoke debates with different questions. <Track 2>
