A selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a digital camera or camera phone held in the hand or supported by a selfie stick. Selfies are often shared on social networking services such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. They are usually flattering and made to appear casual. Most selfies are taken with a camera held at arm's length or pointed at a mirror, rather than by using a self-timer. A selfie stick may be used to widen the angle of view, such as for group selfies.
Selfie – a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media.

Travellers and phone-camera lovers need to note a new danger that has recently come to light. This new life-threatening hazard has appeared in the past few years and is now a ubiquitous part of life. It is also proving to be twice as lethal as being killed by a shark. What is this potential new menace? Well, it is the selfie. Yes – love them or hate them, the desire to take a photo of yourself in front of a world-famous site or to strike a pose with a friend has resulted in more deaths in 2015 than shark attacks. It has been reported that so far this year, 12 people have died as a result of trying to take a selfie. This compares to just six deaths due to unprovoked shark attacks.
Selfie-related accidents can happen in all manner of circumstances. The website Wikipedia.com has detailed a number of deaths seen this year. They include two Russian men who were killed while taking a selfie with a hand grenade; three Indian students who were killed by an oncoming train while taking selfies on train tracks; and an American woman who fell to her death while taking a selfie with her boyfriend on a cliff in South Africa. The next death came in November 2015 when a Japanese tourist died falling down the stairs while trying to get a shot of himself at the Taj Mahal in India. There may be more. A Russian government spokeswoman told reporters that in July, there were, "dozens of selfie-related deaths" in Russia alone.

2) Read the text and write down social and psychological problems that arise among people making selfies.
Reporting your school/university or job news, hanging out with friends, visiting a party, relaxing at home – there is a selfie for each moment. Nowadays more and more people choose to put their lives on display on Facebook and Twitter.
Selfies are popular with both men and women. Many celebrities post their selfies for their fans and followers on social media. Besides provocative celebrity selfies are the subject of regular press coverage.
The social networks are becoming the source of narcissism, with many people trying to be always in the spotlight. Problems, success and personal events are made public in hope to attract somebody’s attention. Many selfies are intended to present a flattering image of the person.
Scientists say that excessive (= too many) selfies mean a personal psychological disorder. Generally speaking, psychologists believe that people who feel lonely are the ones who take a lot of selfies. They take a lot of selfies and put them online in order to get admiration from others. Such people see social media as a platform where they have a chance be positively evaluated and liked by the world.
5. Round-up.
Teacher: To finish up our today’s discussion answer my questions:
- Do you fix happy moments of your life with selfies?
- Are selfies easy to make and share?
- Why do people make selfies according to specialists?
Selfies are easy to create and share and people can easily control how they present themselves in social networks. Specialists consider that using their selfies many people try to conceal lower self-esteem, impulsiveness, and psychopathy. However, many selfies are fun and one could document many happy moments through them.
6. Hometask
- Search the Internet and find out more about selfies. Share what you discover with your partner(s) in the next lesson.
- Reading. Read the text and put the parts of it in right order.
