1 Christmas in Britain

All English people celebrate Christmas (or X-mas) on the 25th of December. What kind of holiday is it? It is the yearly celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It falls on December 25 by the Catholic Church and on the 7th of January by the Orthodox Church. This holiday means the beginning of the new year and the new life. English people celebrate this holiday with the evergreen tree - Christmas tree. Children rut along sock, called a Christmas stocking at the end of their beds and Santa Claus conies down the chimney to bring them presents. Christmas Day is the greatest holiday in England. It is interesting to visit the shops before this holiday. There are a lot of nice Christmas cards and presents there. English people like this holiday very much and prepare for it beforehand. They buy presents for each other, try to send Christmas cards for their relatives and friends. It is interesting to visit London during this holiday. There is a Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square. We can see many lights, toys and sweets all over this tree. Everywhere you can see slogans "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year".

Poem № 1

The snow is falling.
The wind is blowing.
The ground is white
All day and all night.
The ground is white
All day and all night.

Poem № 2

When windows are frosty
And icy in places,
I like to write letters
And draw funny faces,
Or flowers or houses
Or maybe a cat -
I really wish windows
Were always like that!

Poem № 3.

I wish I were a Snowman,
So tall and big, and white.
I’d never have to clean my teeth,
Or go to bed at night.
But maybe Mister Snowman
Is wishing he were me,
For I’ll be here when summer comes,
But where will the Snowman be?

The Poor Man and the Elf"

Действующие лица: the Narrator, the Poor Man, the Wife, the Rich Woman, the Elf.

The Wife: It is Christmas Eve and our children are hungry. We have no money at all. Maybe the rich woman could give you some money for your work now?

The Poor man: Ok, I will go and ask her.

The Narrator: And the poor man went to the village to ask the rich woman for some money. It was a long way, he had to walk through the forest. It took him long, but finally he came to the rich woman's house.

The Rich woman: What do you want?

The Poor man: I'm sorry, milady, could you give me some money for my work now?

The Rich Woman: No, I can't. My husband is away. Come in three day's time when he returns!

The Poor Man: But my children and wife are hungry. And I can't buy any nice food for them. It's Christmas, a great holiday! Please, help us!

The Rich Woman: I tell you my husband is away and I can't give you anything without him! So, go home and don't bother me anymore!

The Narrator: And the poor man went home without any money. He was very sad and the road seemed very long to him. While he was going through the forest he suddenly saw something strange.

The Poor Man: What's that? I think there is a light in the forest! Oh, that's an Elf's house! As far as I know elves are not friendly. I'd better go away or I'd get into trouble!

The Elf: Stop, man! I am not going to do you any harm, I know when a man really needs help and I will help you. Come over here and look at that tree!

The Poor Man: Oh, there are a lot of tasty things there: cakes, sweets, nuts, candies!

The Elf: Take this bag and get some nice tasty things for your children!

The Poor Man: God bless you, good elf! We shall never forget your kindness!

The Elf: Merry Christmas and good luck for you and your family!

The Narrator: Poor man took the bag of sweets and went back home as fast as he could. Suddenly he felt it was much harder for him to walk.

The Poor Man: Oh, it is very strange! The bad is growing heavier and heavier!

The Narrator: At last the poor man got home. His wife was waiting for him impatiently.

The Wife: Have you brought any money?

The Poor Man: No, but I have brought a lot of tasty things for our children - a gift from a good elf!

The Wife: Look! There are not only sweets and cakes, there are also some gold coins in the bag!

The Poor Man: That's why the bag was so heavy. God save the good elf!

The Narrator: And they lived happily ever after and the man's children were never hungry.

Oh, Christmas Tree!”

Oh, Christmas Tree! Oh, Christmas Tree!
How ever green your branches!
Oh, Christmas Tree! Oh, Christmas Tree!
How ever green your branches!
They are green when summer days are bright.
They are green when winter snow is white.
Oh, Christmas Tree! Oh, Christmas Tree!
Your branches green delight us!

Poem № 1

The snow is falling.
The wind is blowing.
The ground is white.
All and all night.
Falling gently down,
Falling on the houses
All around the town.
Listen to the wind
Blowing to the snow,
Blowing around the houses
All down the row.
Who comes around on a special night?
Santa comes around on a special night.
Special night, beard that’s white –
Must be Santa, must be Santa,
Must be Santa, Santa Claus.
Whose boots and suit of red?
Santa’s boots and suit of red.
Who wears a long cap on his head?
Santa wears a long cap on his head.
Whose great big cherry nose?
Santa’s a great big cherry nose.
Who laughs this way: ”Ho, ho, ho?”
Santa laughs this way: ”Ho, ho, ho”.
Ho, ho, ho, cherry nose,
Cap on head, suit of red,
Special night, beard that’s white.
Must be Santa, must be Santa,

Poem № 2

Rudolph the red - nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would never say it glows
All the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolf
Join in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say
Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won't you ride my sleigh tonight?
Then how the reindeer loved him
And they shouted out with glee
Rudolph, the red-nosed Rudolph,
You will go down in history!

Santa Claus and Three Poor Daughters"

Santa Claus, Poor Man, the First Daughter, the Second Daughter, the Third Daughter.

Santa Claus: Oh, it is so cold today! It is winter. I want all people to be happy in winter! Look! It is a very nice house. What is there inside the house, I wonder?

(Santa goes away, Father and three Daughters appear on the stage)

Father: Come to me my dear daughters! Today is Christmas Eve. Everything is so beautiful!

1-st Daughter: Yes, father! everything is beautiful!

2-nd Daughter: People say all wishes may come true this night!

3-rd Daughter: Dear father! We all have our special wishes.

Father: What are they, my dear daughters? Tell me about all your wishes!

3-rd Daughter: We are young and nice and we want to marry young men.

1-st Daughter: I want a nice wedding!

2-nd Daughter: I want a nice wedding too!

Father: But my dear daughters! We are so very poor! We don't have money for three wedding parties!

1-st Daughter: Such a pity!

2-nd Daughter: Let's make a wish this night to have enough money and to marry young men!

3-rd Daughter: Yes, people say all our wishes may come true this night!

(Father and his daughters go away from the stage, there is a fireplace and three stockings are near the fireplace. Santa Claus comes to the stage. He is the house of the poor girls.)

Santa Claus: I want all people to be happy! I will give money to the poor girls! I will put some money into their stockings, they will wake up in the morning find the money and they will marry the men they love!

Jingle Bells":

Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
Down the hill we go
Laughing all the way.
Bells on bobtail ring,
Making spirits bright.
Oh, what fun it’s to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight.
Jingle, Bells! Jingle, Bells!
Jingle all the way!
Oh, what fun it’s to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.

The Legend of the Rose"

Действующие лица: the Narrator, the Magi, the Shepherdess, the Angel.

The Narrator: It happened in December, the night when everybody went to see the new-born Savior. The three Wise Men, the Magi, came from the East following the Christmas star. When they came near the stable they saw a shepherdess Madelon by name. She was looking after her sheep.

The Magi: We have come to see the new-born King. We have brought Him rich presents. Where can we find Him?

The Shepherdess: I am sorry, I don't know. But why do you think you can find Him here?

The Magi: We followed the Star that led us to this place.

The Angel: You can find Him in the stable!

The Magi: Thank you, let's go and pay homage to the King.

The Angel (to the Shepherdess): Why are you standing here? Leave your sheep, go and look at our Lord!

The Shepherdess: But I have no present to give Him. What shall I do? Maybe I can find some flowers. There are no flowers at all! Poor me!

The Angel: Why are you crying?

The Shepherdess: I have nothing to give to the King!

The Angel: Look! What is there beneath your feet?

The Shepherdess: Oh, there are roses! They are so beautiful! But the Magi have such wonderful rich gifts and my roses are very poor!

The Angel: You are very wrong. This is the best present because it is made of love!

The Narrator: And the Shepherdess brought the roses to the Baby and He smiled at her because her present was the most precious.
