ХОД УРОКА

Teacher: Good morning! Sit down. How are you? Tell me please what is the topic of our discussion?

Pupils: Two American presidents.

Teacher: We have already spoken about G.Washington. Today we’ll continue talking about A.Lincoln, the 16th American president.

The main objections of the lesson are:

  1. To develop speaking and listening skills
  2. To practise some elements of debate

Teacher: Who is the president of the USA now?
Can you be the American President? Why not?
Who was the 1st US President?
Why did people respect him?

Teacher: Your homework was to read the text about A.Lincoln, the 16th American President. There are a lot of difficult proper names and now your task is to listen to the speaker on the tape and to pronounce them after him. Open your books (Ex.20 p.256).

And now I’d like you to pronounce them after me.

Teacher: So, thank you. Look at the screen. There are true and false statements. If the statement is false correct it.

Thank you. Let’s continue our work. I would like you to answer some questions on the text. Open your books and do Ex.22 p.259)

(Ex.22 p.259) It’s good and now I would like you to work in pairs and complete the information about A.Lincoln.

(Ex.23 p.260). Now look at the screen and let’s compare your answers with my answers.

Teacher: Thank you for your work. By the way, I’ve prepared a surprise for you. Imagine that the door will open and you will see the 16th President of the USA. The door opens and the pupils see A.Lincoln. (Choose a pupil from the group who can answer some questions of the students).
Mr. President, thank you for the coming. We know that you are very busy. Could you answer some questions?

  1. Is it difficult to be the US President?
  2. What did you do during the Civil war?
  3. How did you get education?

Teacher: Today, you’ve learned a lot about A.Lincoln and now I’d like you to tell us a few words about him (1 or 2 pupils try to sum up the information about this President).
Now it’s time to start practising some elements of debate. Look at the screen.

The motion is “A book is a blessing”

Raise your hands those who are in favour of this motion. You are a team of proposers and the rest are opposers. Change your seats. Your homework was to think of some arguments for and against the motion. You’ll have 3 minutes and discuss them in your teams and then you’ll take turns to give arguments for and against.

Teacher: Your time is over. Let’s start with the team of proposers.

(The pupils from this team give arguments for the motion. Then the floor is given to the team of opposers and the pupils give the arguments against the motion.)

Thank you. Now I’d like one speaker from both teams to sum up for your sides.

Teacher: Reading good books enriches our mind and life. In spite of the fact that there are a lot of books that are not worth reading we should read books, they transport us into different worlds and introduce us to people who lived many years ago, we can learn a lot of interesting information from books.
